Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 5 shipments have reached 97.9 million units worldwide as of September 30, 2026, bringing the console closer to the 100 million milestone. The company also revealed that Marvel’s Wolverine has sold 2.4 million copies worldwide as of November 4, following its September launch on PS5.
The figures were disclosed on November 5 in Sony Group Corporation’s financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2026, covering July through September. Alongside the hardware milestone, Sony reported increased PlayStation software sales and monthly active users, despite a year-over-year decline in console shipments.
During the three months ended September 30, Sony shipped 2.6 million PS5 consoles worldwide. This represents a decline of 1.4 million units compared with the 4 million consoles shipped during the same quarter in 2025, equivalent to a 35% year-over-year decrease.

The latest figures bring cumulative PS5 shipments to 97.9 million units, leaving the platform approximately 2.1 million units short of 100 million. Sony previously reported 93.7 million cumulative shipments at the end of March 2026, followed by another 1.6 million units during the April-to-June quarter.
These figures represent shipments to retailers and distribution channels rather than consoles purchased directly by consumers. Sony uses this sell-in measurement when reporting PlayStation hardware performance.
Marvel’s Wolverine was another notable part of Sony’s latest financial disclosure. The action-adventure game, developed by Insomniac Games, has reached an estimated 2.4 million copies sold worldwide as of November 4, approximately 50 days after its September 15, 2026 launch.
Unlike the hardware shipment figures, the Wolverine total represents estimated sell-through sales to consumers. Sony’s reported first-party software figures exclude additional downloadable content.
The result provides an early sales benchmark for Insomniac’s latest Marvel game. For comparison, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sold 2.5 million copies on its October 20, 2023 release day and reached 5 million copies within 11 days, according to Sony’s historical sales data. Wolverine’s 2.4 million units over 50 days therefore represents a slower initial sales pace than the studio’s previous major Marvel release, although the games launched under different market conditions.
PlayStation software sales also increased during the July-to-September quarter. Combined PS5 and PS4 full-game software sales reached 88.2 million units, compared with 80.3 million during the corresponding quarter in 2025. This represents an increase of 7.9 million units year over year.
Of those sales, 8.2 million units came from Sony’s first-party games, up from 6.3 million in the previous year’s quarter. The increase reflects stronger sales volumes across PlayStation’s internally published software portfolio, even as hardware shipments declined.
Digital purchases continued to account for the majority of full-game sales. Sony reported that 78% of PS5 and PS4 full-game software units sold during the quarter were digital downloads, compared with 72% during the same period last year. The metric covers complete game purchases rather than downloadable expansions, in-game currency, or other add-on content.
PlayStation’s online audience also expanded. Sony recorded 127 million monthly active users across its PlayStation ecosystem as of September 30, an increase of eight million compared with the 119 million recorded a year earlier.
The monthly active user figure measures unique accounts that played games or used PlayStation services online during the final month of the quarter. It does not represent the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers.
The increase in network activity comes as Sony continues to maintain its subscription offering, including the November 2026 PlayStation Plus monthly games, alongside its digital storefront and multiplayer services.
Sony’s latest figures show a contrast between hardware and software performance. While quarterly PS5 shipments fell compared with 2025, full-game sales, first-party software volumes, and PlayStation monthly active users all increased.
With 97.9 million consoles shipped worldwide, the PS5 is approaching a significant hardware milestone. Sony has not announced a specific date or forecast for when cumulative shipments will surpass 100 million units.
