Aeterna Lucis will launch on December 3, 2026, Aeternum Game Studios has confirmed. The developer announced the date alongside a new gameplay trailer on September 10, ending the uncertainty that followed the Metroidvania’s delay out of 2025. The studio says the sequel to Aeterna Noctis is now entering its final stretch ahead of release.
Aeterna Lucis was previously scheduled for September 2025 before being pushed into 2026. Aeternum Game Studios said at the time that it wanted to avoid launching directly against Hollow Knight: Silksong and was also waiting for the development hardware needed to support a simultaneous release across next-generation platforms. The studio stressed that the game itself was already complete and that the extra time would be used for polishing and refinement.
The newly confirmed December date gives the project a firm target after Steam had continued listing only a broad Q4 2026 window. Aeternum says the additional development time has been used to rework systems, refine combat and continue improving the hand-drawn presentation. The studio described the delay as an opportunity to avoid rushing the game rather than a response to fundamental development problems.

Aeterna Lucis continues the story of Aeterna Noctis but shifts the focus to the Queen of Light. After the events of the first game disrupt the balance between Light and Darkness, she awakens in a changing world and is tasked with preventing the collapse of existence while searching for her old rival. The sequel keeps the interconnected Metroidvania structure of its predecessor while introducing new movement abilities, weapons and combat systems.
The new gameplay presentation also highlighted several technical and structural changes. Aeternum says the world is designed as a seamless interconnected space without loading screens between areas, while a new real-time lighting system reacts dynamically to combat, projectiles and environments. The minimap has also been rebuilt as a visual representation of individual rooms, intended to make navigation easier without losing the game’s detailed art style.
Difficulty will again be divided into multiple approaches. Aeterna Mode is designed as the more accessible option, emphasizing exploration, story and smoother progression, while Lucis Mode targets players looking for the more demanding platforming and combat style associated with Aeterna Noctis. The studio says both modes are built around the same overall world rather than functioning as separate campaigns.
Aeterna Lucis was first announced in December 2022 and has gone through several release windows since then. It was initially planned for 2024, later moved to September 2025, and then delayed again into 2026. The December 3 date is therefore the most specific launch commitment the developer has given since the project was revealed.
The game is currently confirmed for PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms, with Nintendo versions also previously announced. Aeternum had cited the lack of Switch 2 development kits as one reason for the 2025 delay, saying it wanted to ensure a simultaneous release across newer hardware. The studio has not yet published a detailed platform-by-platform launch breakdown alongside the December 3 announcement.
For Aeternum Game Studios, the sequel represents the next major expansion of the Aeterna universe after Aeterna Noctis and Summum Aeterna. The developer has continued supporting the first game with new content while preparing Lucis, including material designed to bridge the story between the two titles. With the December 3 date now set, Aeterna Lucis is finally positioned to arrive more than four years after its original announcement.
