Rockstar Workers to Vote on Union Recognition During GTA 6 Launch

Rockstar Games employees in the United Kingdom will vote on whether to formally recognize the IWGB Rockstar Game Workers Union between November 12 and November 26, 2026. The two-week voting period will coincide with the November 19 launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, potentially marking a major development in labor representation within the British video game industry.

The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) announced the ballot on October 27, confirming that eligible employees will cast anonymous votes online. The vote follows months of discussions between Rockstar management and union representatives over a proposed recognition agreement.

If employees approve the agreement, the Rockstar Game Workers Union would become the largest recognized union in the UK’s video game sector, according to the IWGB.

The proposed agreement would provide workers with a formal voice in workplace decisions involving pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working arrangements, and generative AI policies. The union has also highlighted pensions and parental leave as issues where employees could benefit from collective representation.

Formal recognition would establish a framework for collective bargaining between employees and management. However, approval would not automatically guarantee changes to pay, working hours, or other employment conditions. Those matters would remain subject to subsequent negotiations.

The recognition process follows an organizing campaign that has developed across Rockstar’s UK operations. Workers sought voluntary union recognition earlier this year, with discussions over an agreement taking place since July.

Rockstar Game Workers Union committee member Shanti Easton-Steel described the upcoming ballot as an opportunity for employees to gain greater transparency over workplace decisions. Easton-Steel highlighted concerns surrounding the gender pay gap, inconsistent overtime policies, and job security following major game releases.

The vote also comes amid an ongoing employment tribunal concerning Rockstar’s dismissal of 31 employees in October 2025.

The IWGB alleges that the dismissals were connected to union organizing activities and constituted unlawful treatment of workers. Rockstar disputes those allegations, maintaining that the employees were dismissed for gross misconduct involving the sharing of confidential company information.

The employment proceedings are separate from the recognition ballot. Closing submissions in the tribunal are expected on November 17 and 18, immediately before GTA VI’s scheduled release.

Rockstar’s head of publishing, Jennifer Kolbe, recently indicated that management would respect employees’ decision on union representation. Speaking to Bloomberg Businessweek, Kolbe said the company would follow the workforce’s preference regarding unionization.

The timing places the recognition ballot alongside one of Rockstar’s most significant product launches. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, with the vote opening one week before release and closing one week afterward.

Rockstar has also been sharing additional information about the upcoming game, including its approach to Lucia's character and the development of Leonida's world.

The union announcement does not indicate that the ballot will affect GTA VI’s release schedule or development plans. Its immediate significance concerns the employment conditions and collective representation of the developers working at Rockstar’s UK studios.

The outcome will determine whether the proposed recognition agreement takes effect, potentially giving Rockstar employees a stronger collective role in negotiations over working conditions, employment protections, and the use of generative AI in game development.
