Rockstar Games has shared more detail on how Lucia Caminos, Leonida and GTA VI’s surrounding world were developed, with the full LOVE Magazine Issue 27 revealing material beyond the publication’s initial preview. The feature includes comments from Rockstar developers and writers on Lucia’s characterization, the studio’s extensive Florida research and the amount of writing dedicated to radio, advertisements and conversations happening around the player. Together, the new details provide a clearer picture of how Rockstar is approaching both its protagonists and the everyday texture of GTA VI’s open world.
Lucia was designed to feel like a fully realized Rockstar protagonist rather than simply a counterpart to Jason. Rockstar has already established that her family has roots in Liberty City, and the LOVE feature expands on how the writing team approached her background and identity. The broader goal, according to the developers, is to make both Lucia and Jason vulnerable, flawed and capable of changing through their relationship rather than treating either character as a fixed archetype.
That emphasis follows Rockstar’s experience with protagonists such as Arthur Morgan, whose emotional arc became central to Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar North Co-Studio Head Rob Nelson has previously discussed wanting players to form a similar emotional connection with Jason and Lucia while still giving GTA VI its own tone. The pair’s relationship is therefore being built around quieter moments and personal conflict as much as the robberies and high-speed action associated with the series.

The new LOVE material also sheds more light on Rockstar’s research process for Leonida. Developers travelled through Miami and other parts of Florida, including surrounding towns and the Florida Keys, as part of an effort to understand the state beyond its most familiar tourist imagery. Rockstar representatives have described speaking with people who live and work there, while the research fed into the exaggerated wealth, poverty, excess and constant hustle that define the game’s fictional setting.
Those trips were not simply used to reproduce recognizable landmarks. Rockstar’s broader approach has been to absorb details about how different communities, neighborhoods and environments function, then reinterpret them through Grand Theft Auto’s satirical lens. The studio has already discussed how Leonida’s wildlife, geography and Florida-inspired environments grew from extensive real-world research, while its weather systems also draw on conditions observed across the state.
World-building extends well beyond the physical map. Rockstar says radio programming, advertisements, pedestrian dialogue and other background material are treated as a major part of the writing process rather than as secondary decoration. Open World Writing Director James Horton described the philosophy by saying there is effectively no background in GTA VI, only material the player is not currently paying attention to.
That approach helps explain the volume of incidental conversations and in-world media Rockstar is creating. Political advertising, talk radio, fictional commercials and pedestrian exchanges are all intended to keep Leonida active even when the player is not following a mission. The goal is for small areas to remain interesting after repeated visits, rather than functioning only as scenery between major objectives.
Rockstar is also leaning heavily into satire as it recreates a contemporary version of Florida. Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries has said that simply mirroring the real world would not be enough, so the studio is exaggerating aspects of modern life to make them more absurd, aggressive and recognizably Grand Theft Auto. That philosophy applies to both the people inhabiting Leonida and the media constantly surrounding the player.
The latest comments build on other recent revelations about Rockstar’s attention to environmental detail. GTA VI’s Florida-inspired weather systems are being designed around more than constant sunshine, while previous material has shown the studio studying everything from wildlife to regional architecture and local culture. The LOVE feature suggests the same level of attention is being applied to writing and ambient activity.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With Rockstar now discussing not just the game’s headline characters but the writing, research and incidental detail surrounding them, Leonida is increasingly being presented as a world designed to reward players who spend time away from the main story as well as those following Jason and Lucia’s central narrative.
