Battlefield REDSEC is getting a faster Battle Royale variant called Rapid Royale, while proximity chat will begin rolling out on September 15. Battlefield Studios confirmed both additions as part of its latest REDSEC update, following an earlier report from Insider Gaming. Rapid Royale is planned for Season 5, while proximity chat will first arrive as a live testing feature in Battle Royale later this month.
Rapid Royale is designed to reduce downtime between fights without replacing REDSEC’s existing Battle Royale mode. Battlefield Studios says the variant will use fewer players, smaller play spaces, faster-moving circles and shorter match lengths, creating more frequent engagements throughout a round. The underlying Battle Royale structure remains intact, but the pacing is intended to push squads into combat more quickly instead of leaving them searching Fort Lyndon for their next encounter.
A specific release date for Rapid Royale has not yet been announced beyond its Season 5 window. That makes the mode a longer-term addition than proximity chat, which already has a September 15 launch date. Battlefield Studios has described Rapid Royale as an alternative for players who want shorter sessions and more consistent action rather than a fundamental redesign of REDSEC.

Proximity chat will initially be available only in Battle Royale and is being introduced through Battlefield Labs in Live. Nearby players will be heard based on their position relative to the listener, with directional audio designed to make voices feel as though they are coming from their actual location. Environmental factors will also affect communication, with walls able to obstruct voices, indoor areas altering how they sound and vehicles taken into account by the system.
Battlefield Studios is also adding several moderation and control features around proximity chat. Players will be able to quickly switch voice channels or disable proximity chat altogether, while the Battle Royale scoreboard will retain a list of recently heard users so they can be muted, reported or blocked. Only four nearby speakers can be heard simultaneously, with additional voices temporarily suppressed until a channel becomes available.
Solo players and parties will default to Game voice chat so they can participate in nearby conversations. Battlefield Studios says the initial rollout is intended to collect real-world feedback on audio range, clarity, moderation tools and the effect proximity communication has on matches. Because it is being treated as a live test, the studio has warned that the feature may occasionally be disabled while fixes or adjustments are applied.
The September 15 introduction also represents only the first stage of Battlefield’s proximity chat plans. Battlefield Studios previously confirmed that the feature is intended to expand beyond REDSEC and eventually reach Battlefield 6 multiplayer. The Battle Royale rollout will effectively serve as the proving ground before the team decides how the system should operate in the broader multiplayer experience.
REDSEC’s expansion comes alongside a renewed push into organized competition. Season 4 Cash Cups begin September 19 with $150,000 in combined prize money across APAC, EMEA and the Americas, followed by Open Series events beginning October 24. The returning Battlefield REDSEC Elite Series will then run during Season 5 with a global prize pool of $1.338 million.
That competitive schedule and the new gameplay additions give REDSEC several significant updates across the remainder of 2026. Rapid Royale addresses players looking for a quicker Battle Royale format, while proximity chat adds a communication system capable of creating encounters between nearby friendly and hostile squads. Both features expand REDSEC without requiring ownership of Battlefield 6, as the mode remains available as a standalone free-to-play experience.
For now, proximity chat is the first of the two additions players will actually be able to try. Its initial Battle Royale rollout begins September 15, while Rapid Royale is scheduled for Season 5 with its exact launch timing still to be announced.
