Capcom has narrowed the release window for Mega Man: Dual Override to spring 2027. The new timing was confirmed during Nintendo’s September 9 Direct, where the game appeared with another look at playable Proto Man, the Custom Chip system and its central Override mechanic. Nintendo also confirmed that new Mega Man and Proto Man amiibo figures will launch alongside the game.
Dual Override is being developed as a new entry in the classic side-scrolling Mega Man series rather than a remake or collection. Mega Man remains one of the two playable characters, but Proto Man joins him with a distinct combat style built around his shield and other unique abilities. Capcom has previously stressed that the pair are designed to play differently rather than functioning as alternate skins for the same moveset.
Customization comes through the new Custom Chip system, which lets players equip additional abilities and alter how either character handles stages. Capcom has shown chips that provide rapid-fire attacks, a protective shield bubble and hovering, while the finished game is expected to offer a wider selection that can be mixed and matched. The system is intended to let players adjust their approach without replacing the traditional structure of moving through stages and confronting Robot Masters.

The Override system provides a more temporary boost. By filling an Override gauge through combat, players can activate a state that pushes the character beyond normal operating limits and increases offensive potential for a limited period. The trade-off is that some abilities become temporarily unavailable or weakened after the effect ends, making the timing of an Override activation important rather than allowing it to function as a risk-free power-up.
Capcom first gave players a substantial look at those systems during Gamescom 2026, where it also introduced Twinkle Girl as one of the game’s eight new Robot Masters. Her stage uses fireworks and electronic signage as part of its visual identity, while Astro Man from Mega Man 8 has also been confirmed to appear. Capcom has indicated that other familiar Robot Masters will return alongside the new lineup.
Some of Dual Override’s broader structure had already begun surfacing outside official announcements. A leaked Steam achievement list appeared to reveal the game’s Robot Master lineup, boss encounters and several progression-related challenges before Capcom publicly detailed all of them. Those details remain separate from the newly confirmed spring 2027 timing, which now gives the project a considerably narrower launch target.
The September Direct also highlighted Proto Man’s more technical playstyle. His shield can be used aggressively as well as defensively, giving him different options from Mega Man’s familiar ranged Buster attacks. Both characters can use Custom Chips and Override, so the distinction between them appears to come primarily from their base abilities and how those systems interact with each moveset.
Dual Override follows Mega Man 11, which launched in 2018 and introduced the Double Gear system. Capcom has said the new game is designed for longtime fans while remaining approachable to players who may not have experience with previous entries. Custom Chips in particular give players more control over difficulty and playstyle without abandoning the precise platforming and boss-focused structure associated with the classic series.
The game is currently confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Capcom has not announced a specific date within the spring 2027 window.
Mega Man: Dual Override will therefore arrive sometime in spring 2027, with Mega Man and Proto Man both playable and new amiibo figures launching the same day. The latest Nintendo Direct did not fundamentally redefine the systems Capcom showed at Gamescom, but it did give the game its clearest release target yet while putting Proto Man and the new customization mechanics back in focus.
