Big news for virtual reality enthusiasts: Sony’s PlayStation VR2 headset just became much more affordable. Originally launched at $549.99 (€599.99 / £529.99), the price has officially been cut by $150 (€150 / £130).
After the price cut, the new price of the PlayStation VR2 is now down to a more accessible $399.99 (€449.99 / £399.99). Plus, if you’re new to the VR world, there’s an enticing bundle that includes Horizon: Call of the Mountain at the same discounted price.
In a recent PlayStation Blog post, Sony stated,
“For those of you who have been waiting for the opportunity to jump into PlayStation VR2 and experience what this generation’s innovative virtual reality system has to offer, we are happy to share some great news. Starting in March, we’re reducing the recommended retail price (RRP) of PS VR2.”
The company highlighted a wave of new games, including the intense Alien: Rogue Incursion and the eerie Metro Awakening VR, along with upcoming titles like Hitman World of Assassination and Aces of Thunder.
Additionally, with the new PS VR2 PC adapter, players can now access thousands of VR games on Steam, seamlessly bridging PlayStation’s ecosystem with PC gaming.
But wait, there’s more! A recent update introduced real-time hand tracking, letting you interact with games like Waltz of the Wizard using just your hands—no controllers needed.
Imagine casting spells or solving puzzles with natural gestures, thanks to the headset’s built-in cameras. Sony promises this is just the beginning of “more immersive experiences” on the horizon.
Why A PlayStation VR2 Price Cut?
The PS VR2 launched in February 2023 with a strong start, selling nearly 600,000 units in its first six weeks. But since then, Sony’s been quiet about sales numbers. Reports suggest the company hit pause on production in March 2024 to clear out unsold inventory—hinting that the headset might not have met initial expectations.
While the PS VR2 boasts a handful of exclusives, like VR versions of Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Village, Sony itself has only published two dedicated games: Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Firewall Ultra, plus a VR mode for Gran Turismo 7.
For a device two years in, the library still feels lean, which might explain why Sony’s leaning into price cuts and PC compatibility to attract new fans.
If you’ve been curious about VR but hesitated due to cost, this price cut makes the PlayStation VR2 a much more tempting entry point. With smoother pricing, cooler features, and a growing lineup of games, Sony’s clearly hoping to reignite interest, just don’t expect a huge library of exclusives—yet.
