Phoenix Cyclops will join MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls on November 2 as the game’s first Year 1 DLC character. Arc System Works producer Takeshi Yamanaka confirmed the release date alongside a new gameplay trailer detailing Cyclops’ Phoenix Force mechanics, Dark Phoenix transformation and alternate costumes. Ray Chase voices the character, while the “Classic” and “Legacy” DLC costumes will launch on the same day.

Arc System Works chose the Phoenix version of Cyclops rather than his more familiar traditional appearance to give the character a different visual identity and fighting style. Yamanaka said Cyclops had been considered for the base roster as part of the Unbreakable X-Men team, but the developers wanted to avoid simply reproducing the versions players had already seen in previous Marvel fighting games. The result draws heavily from the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, where Cyclops becomes one of the Phoenix Five.

In combat, Phoenix Cyclops is designed as an all-rounder who can pressure opponents at both long and close range. His moveset includes multiple Optic Blast techniques, projectiles, rushing attacks, throws and setup tools, while the Phoenix Force gives him wide-area fire attacks capable of controlling large portions of the screen. The combination is intended to let him switch between zoning and more aggressive close-range play rather than committing to a single archetype.

His defining mechanic is a resource called Solar Shards. Using Optic Blast attacks builds Phoenix Force energy, and collecting four Solar Shards allows Cyclops to transform into Dark Phoenix. That form provides a significant temporary power increase but steadily drains his health, forcing players to decide when the added offensive potential is worth the risk.

The system reflects the character’s comic-book inspiration rather than simply functioning as a conventional powered-up state. Arc System Works specifically linked the transformation to the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, where Cyclops eventually absorbs the Phoenix power carried by his teammates. Managing that destructive power is therefore built directly into his gameplay, with Dark Phoenix offering greater strength at the cost of survivability.

The November 2 release will also add two alternative looks for players who prefer more recognizable versions of Cyclops. The Classic and Legacy costumes were created because the developers expected some fans to want his established comic and animated appearances rather than the Phoenix-focused redesign. Arc System Works says it plans to take a similar approach when significantly reinterpreting other Marvel characters.

Phoenix Cyclops was first confirmed as the game’s inaugural Year 1 additional character in July, but the new reveal provides the first detailed breakdown of how he actually plays. His arrival continues MARVEL Tōkon’s post-launch character support following the game’s August 6 release on PS5 and PC. Arc System Works has also said future updates will include additional characters, stages and other content.

Players will have an opportunity to try Phoenix Cyclops before his official release. He will be playable at the MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls booth during EVO France, which runs from October 9 through October 11. The event gives attendees several weeks of hands-on access before the DLC becomes broadly available.

Sony is also using the announcement to introduce a new entry point for players who have not yet purchased the game. A three-hour MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Game Trial is now available to PlayStation Plus subscribers, while the game’s first PlayStation Store sale has also started. The Ultimate Edition, which includes the Year 1 Pass containing Phoenix Cyclops, is among the editions being discounted.

The DLC follows Arc System Works’ broader focus on expanding MARVEL Tōkon beyond its launch roster rather than treating release day as the end of development. Phoenix Cyclops is the first major test of that plan, combining a familiar Marvel character with a less commonly used version and a mechanically distinct transformation system. His November 2 launch will establish the template for how the game’s Year 1 additions are introduced and differentiated from the existing roster.
