God of War began as a groundbreaking video game series that redefined action-adventure storytelling and earned global acclaim. With over 50 million copies sold, the God of War 2018 elevated the series to new heights by blending Norse methodology—setting a stage for its Season 1 and 2 TV adaptations.

It’s been over two years since this gaming juggernaut began its leap to television, with Amazon Prime announcing its production. God of War series is a live-action adaptation co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Production. First revealed in December 2022, the show will follow the events of the 2018 God of War game.

The current showrunner for the TV series, Ronald Moore, shared an exciting update during an interview with Katie Sackhoff on The Sackhoff Show. Moore revealed that Amazon has already ordered two seasons of the highly anticipated series, even though the first season is still in its scripting stage and no release has been confirmed yet.

Importance: This bold decision clearly signals Amazon Prime’s confidence in the franchise’s success, betting on the power of Kratos and his Norse saga to captivate audiences beyond the gaming world. This early greenlight also raises fans expectations, hinting that the showrunner may already have a multi-season story arc mapped out.

Moore assured fans that progress is underway and hinted that it may not be long before audiences get their first glimpse of Kratos’ live-action debut. Moore, the former Battlestar Galactica executive producer, stated this update earlier this month during a conversation with Katie Sackhoff, who is also known for his role in the sci-fi franchise. He said:

Right now I’m working on an adaptation of a video game called God of War. It’s a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons of. They’ve asked me to come in and I’m literally in the writers’ room working on that.

Arcade Veteran Moore Helms God Of War TV Show

Admitting that he isn’t much of a gamer and had never taken on a project like this before, Moore joked about growing up in the arcade era, where simple games were his comfort zone. He humorously explained how simple commands left him confused and ultimately led to quick defeats in-game.

However, he mentioned that his wife is more familiar with modern gaming, as she is fan of Skyrim.

God Of War Retains Key Players Despite Production Turmoil

Unfortunately, the show faced setbacks during pre-production, with the original creative team departing and Moore stepping in as showrunner. Despite these challenges, key figures like God of War director Cory Barlog and executives from PlayStation Productions and Sony remain attached, helping to keep the project on track.

God of War is just one of several PlayStation titles getting the screen treatment, while we await more updates, fans can check out other adaptations like The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, and the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima anime, set to premier in 2027.
