Hellblade 2: Almost 90% Of Xbox Players Gave Up On The Main Story

Hellblade 2 was anticipated to be a major release for Xbox this year. However, poor marketing and a stronger emphasis on cinematic elements over gameplay and mechanics contributed to its downfall. This led to a disappointing player engagement, with peak numbers on Steam barely reaching under 4,000 players.

Adding to the disappointment, a new report revealed that the game failed to captivate its Xbox audience, with nearly 90% of players abandoning the story despite its brief 5-6 hour length.

Why it matters: A successful game balances gameplay, visuals, mechanics, and narrative. Hellblade 2 needed to excel in all these areas but unfortunately did not, leading to its underwhelming reception.

Hellblade 2 Is Forgiving on PC Despite Breathtaking Visuals

According to the report, only 13% of Xbox players have completed the ‘End The Tyranny’ achievement, which is awarded for finishing the main story. This is concerning for Ninja Theory, especially since Hellblade 2 is the shortest action-adventure game of the year, making such a low completion rate troubling.

One might suspect an achievement issue similar to that in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. However, the report confirms that the achievements in Hellblade 2 function correctly.

The report also mentions that only 52% of players unlocked the first story achievement, which is earned after defeating the first boss about 30 minutes into the game. This implies that nearly half the players didn’t even get past the initial boss fight.

Several factors might have contributed to these statistics. The game’s dark themes and uneventful gameplay, which earned it the unfortunate label of “A Walking Simulator,” could have deterred many players.

Additionally, the game’s availability on Game Pass might mean many players tried it out of curiosity but did not remain engaged. This still reflects poorly on Ninja Theory’s ability to attract and retain new players.

On Steam, the situation is slightly better, with a 37% completion rate for the ‘End The Tyranny’ achievement. However, this is still not a strong figure for a game like Hellblade 2.

Xbox’s Lack Of Marketing For Hellblade 2 Hurt The Game

Despite its struggles, Hellblade 2 deserves praise for its stunning visuals, setting a new standard for graphics in 2024 and beyond, being deemed the most visually impressive title on the Unreal Engine 5 to date.

For those seeking a more cinematic experience, Hellblade 2 might still be appealing. The developers aimed for a high-quality indie film experience. Interested players can find the game on Steam, the Xbox Store, or via the Xbox Game Pass.

Moreover, Ninja Theory has also reportedly been given the green light for the next entry in the series. If this is indeed a reality, we hope that they can focus more on the game’s gameplay and mechanics while keeping the impressive visuals.
