Borderlands 4’s Nintendo Switch 2 version has raised concerns among fans after newly published details revealed significant limitations compared to other platforms. According to the game’s official FAQ, players on Switch 2 will miss out on the series staple of split-screen couch co-op, though full cross-play with PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC is confirmed.
This omission aligns with previous reports, which emphasized that while the Switch 2 port delivers the same exciting Borderlands 4 experience, co-op local play is notably absent.
Adding to the disappointment, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed via interviews and news coverage that the Switch 2 version will target “mostly around 30 FPS,” which may dip further during intensive combat sequences or when playing handheld co-op.

Additionally, even physical editions of the game will require a download—distributed via a game-key card rather than a full cartridge.
The Switch 2 release is set for October 3, 2025, three weeks after the September 12, 2025 launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Players who pre-order Borderlands 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 will receive the “Gilded Glory Pack,” a cosmetic bundle that includes an exclusive Vault Hunter Skin, a unique Weapon Skin, and a custom ECHO-4 Drone Skin. While these items won’t impact gameplay, they add some visual flair for those looking to personalize their characters and gear from day one.
Despite technical constraints, Gearbox affirms that core co-op mechanics are preserved: Borderlands 4 supports up to four-player online co-op, robust cross-play, and seamless connectivity between platforms. Still, the absence of local split screen may disappoint fans who enjoy side-by-side adventures.
Many players are understandably disappointed by the lack of split-screen support, but the decision isn’t entirely shocking. Given the technical demands of Borderlands 4, it’s unlikely the Switch 2 could deliver smooth performance while rendering two viewpoints at once. The hardware limitations make this an expected—if still frustrating—compromise.
Borderlands 4 aims to uphold the series’ legacy of intense co-op action, deep loot systems, and dynamic world traversal. But on Switch 2, that ambition may feel muted. Fans eager for couch co-op may still opt for PlayStation or Xbox, where local multiplayer remains intact.
