The PSVR 2 is the successor to the first PlayStation Virtual Reality Headset. Although it hasn’t performed as well as expected, Sony is working on making the headset compatible with the PC platform.

Starting in August, players will be able to use their PlayStation VR2 headset to play Steam games, thanks to a new app coming to the platform on August 6. The Steam page for the app outlines several key features:

    • Play Steam VR Games: Use the PlayStation VR2 headset and Sense controllers to enjoy VR games and applications available on Steam.
    • Setup and Configuration: The app will facilitate the setup of the PlayStation VR2 on a PC, including firmware updates for both the headset and controllers.
    • Settings Adjustment: Users can modify various settings, such as play area dimensions and screen brightness, directly from the SteamVR dashboard.

Importance: The PSVR 2 represents a significant leap toward a seamless virtual reality experience, where the difference between reality and the digital world is minimal. Its availability on more platforms means more players can enjoy its features, and it is compatible with a broader range of games.

PlayStation VR 2 Has Not Been Performing Too Well

A PC adapter for the PlayStation VR2 will be necessary to use the headset on PC, which will be available from August 7, priced at $59.99 / €59.99 / £49.99. It can be purchased through select retailers and PlayStation’s direct online store. Additionally, players will need a DisplayPort 1.4-compatible cable and a PC that meets the minimum system requirements to use the app.

However, it’s important to note that some of the PlayStation VR2’s advanced features, such as HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (excluding rumble), will not be supported when the headset is used with a PC.

This is one of the biggest downsides of the headset’s compatibility with the PC platform as it loses many of the PSVR 2’s important features. This is likely to be a dealbreaker for many people, especially considering the additional $60 cost for the PC adapter.

Nevertheless, this development marks a significant step in broadening the usability of the PlayStation VR2, providing gamers with more options to enjoy their VR experiences across different platforms.

The PSVR2 hasn’t been performing exceptionally well, but it is a significant step toward bridging the digital and real worlds.

Sony has done a commendable job in the virtual reality market, and we hope they continue to excel in the future. Both virtual reality and augmented reality have a bright future, as evidenced by recent releases like the Apple Vision Pro.
