The Bully Online project, which introduced online multiplayer capabilities to Rockstar Games’ cult classic Bully, has been permanently discontinued just one month after its launch. The mod, led by content creator SWEGTA and developed by a group of dedicated modders known as Fat Pigeon, was made available to players on December 15.

Following its release, excitement grew among fans, who sought to experience new features such as mini-games, competitive racing, and custom vehicles, all of which were absent from the original game.

Unfortunately, on January 14, a message on the official Bully Online Discord server declared that the project would be shut down “forever” within 24 hours. The announcement detailed a series of actions that would take place, including the closure of the official server, cessation of development, removal of the source code from the website, and deletion of all player account data.

A member of the development team emphasized that this decision was not one they had desired, stating,

“For now though, know this was not something we wanted.”

While no explicit reason for the shutdown has been provided, speculation among fans points to potential legal action from Rockstar Games or its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Historically, these companies have been known to challenge fan-made projects and mods, raising concerns about the sustainability of such initiatives.

Previously, SWEGTA had dismissed apprehensions regarding legal issues, asserting that the mod required a legitimate copy of the game to function and did not compete directly with existing Rockstar offerings. However, the introduction of a paid early access version of Bully Online may have attracted scrutiny from the intellectual property holders.

SWEGTA plans to release a video providing further clarification on the situation, although no timeline has been given. Fans have expressed disappointment over the abrupt end of the project, which had taken years to develop and was seen as a rare opportunity to expand on the Bully experience.

    Bully Game

As of now, all traces of Bully Online have been effectively removed from the internet. The mod’s website has been taken down, and any associated content has been erased. SWEGTA confirmed the shutdown on social media, indicating that a detailed statement regarding the circumstances would be forthcoming on January 21.

The sudden shutdown of the Bully Online project raises concerns about the future of fan-driven gaming initiatives, particularly in light of the ongoing tensions between developers and corporate entities over intellectual property rights. Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the mod, the lack of clarity regarding its demise leaves fans and supporters in a state of uncertainty. Further updates from SWEGTA and the development team are anticipated as they navigate the aftermath of this unexpected closure.
