Dead of the Brain, the Japanese zombie horror adventure originally released for NEC’s PC-98 computers in 1992, is now available on Steam, GOG and the FAKKU store. Publisher FAKKU launched the modern PC version on October 30, 2026, introducing an official English localization, enhanced pixel art and optional gameplay improvements while preserving the original point-and-click experience.

Originally developed by FairyTale, Dead of the Brain combines horror adventure gameplay with visual novel storytelling and quick-time events. The new release supports Windows, macOS and Linux, making the 34-year-old game accessible on modern computers without requiring original PC-98 hardware.

The story follows Cole, a young man whose friend Dr. Cooger develops a serum capable of bringing the dead back to life. Although the experiment initially appears successful, the revived subjects return as flesh-hungry zombies. After the creatures escape, the situation escalates into a widespread outbreak that threatens the entire town.

Inspired by American splatter films and zombie horror movies of the 1980s, Dead of the Brain features graphic pixel-art violence, detailed character illustrations and a narrative built around investigating environments and surviving encounters with the undead.

FAKKU has retained the original adventure mechanics rather than completely redesigning the game. Players navigate scenes, examine objects, interact with characters and progress through story sequences, with quick-time events adding moments of immediate danger.

The re-release introduces faithfully upscaled pixel art alongside several optional quality-of-life improvements. These include hover hints and visible interaction hitboxes, which can make objects and interactive areas easier to identify.

Another improvement changes how the game handles failure. Instead of requiring players to reload their last manual save after dying, the modern version allows them to restart from the beginning of the current scene. This reduces the amount of progress lost during difficult encounters without removing the original gameplay structure.

FAKKU also preserves the game’s FM music, with the soundtrack available separately as downloadable content. English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese interface and subtitle support are included.

Despite these enhancements, the publisher cautions that the re-release deliberately retains much of the original interface and gameplay design. Some mechanics may therefore feel dated compared with modern adventure games.

The release continues a broader effort to make older PC horror titles accessible through contemporary digital storefronts. Other recent examples include the return of Ecstatica and Ecstatica II to Steam and GOG, which brought the classic horror adventures to modern computers with updated compatibility and presentation options.

Dead of the Brain is available with a 34% introductory discount through November 6, 2026, reducing its standard US price from $19.99 to $13.19. A playable demo is also available on Steam, while the GOG edition offers DRM-free access.

The Steam listing includes Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud support, although the game does not currently have a confirmed Steam Deck compatibility rating. Its listed minimum Windows requirements include a dual-core 1.8GHz processor, 4GB of RAM and 350MB of available storage.

For players interested in Japanese computer-game history, the new release provides an officially localized version of a PC-98 horror adventure that originally appeared more than three decades ago, retaining its distinctive artwork, soundtrack and gameplay while removing the need for vintage hardware.
