Denuvo has asked a US federal court for permission to subpoena Discord, Valve and Reddit as it attempts to identify the anonymous game cracker known as voices38. The request comes as part of a DMCA anti-circumvention lawsuit filed by Denuvo in September, which accuses voices38 of bypassing its Anti-Tamper protection in 26 games. The company currently does not know the real identity of the person or group behind the handle.
According to the new court filing, Denuvo wants limited early discovery specifically aimed at identifying the defendant before the normal discovery process begins. The company says it has linked voices38 to one Discord account, one Reddit account and seven Steam profiles. It is now asking the court to authorize subpoenas that would require the three platforms to provide information associated with those accounts.
The proposed requests are extensive. Denuvo wants Valve to provide registration details, names, billing addresses, payment information, transaction histories, IP addresses with timestamps, device identifiers and details of linked accounts for the seven Steam profiles it has identified. For Discord and Reddit, the company is also seeking account information that could help establish who controls the profiles, including activity and other identifying records.

Denuvo says it approached the companies directly before seeking court intervention. According to its motion, Valve and Reddit responded that they could not provide the requested user information without legal authority, while Discord did not respond. Denuvo is therefore asking the judge overseeing the case to allow the subpoenas before standard discovery begins.
The lawsuit itself was filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California and names voices38 as an unknown individual or entity alongside additional unnamed defendants. Denuvo alleges that the cracker bypassed its Anti-Tamper system in 26 games, including Hogwarts Legacy, Black Myth: Wukong, Resident Evil Requiem, Doom: The Dark Ages, Sonic Frontiers, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Stellar Blade and Mafia: The Old Country. The complaint relies on the anti-circumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act rather than conventional copyright infringement claims.
That distinction matters because Denuvo does not own the copyrights to the games involved. Instead, it argues that circumventing its protection technology directly harms its business because publishers pay to use Denuvo Anti-Tamper to prevent or delay unauthorized access to protected games. The company is seeking damages and an injunction that would prohibit voices38 from bypassing Denuvo protection in existing and future titles.
The latest filing also reveals that Denuvo’s investigation extends beyond Discord, Reddit and Steam. An attorney for the company said investigators identified cryptocurrency transactions allegedly connected to voices38 through the FixedFloat exchange, involving Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana. The filing does not explain how those transactions were tied to the cracker, however, and Denuvo is not currently asking the court for permission to subpoena FixedFloat.
Voices38 has become particularly notable within the PC cracking scene because of releases that directly patch Denuvo checks rather than relying on some of the newer hypervisor-based bypass techniques. Denuvo says the defendant’s activity accelerated substantially during 2026, with cracks appearing for numerous high-profile releases. The company’s September complaint appears to be one of its most direct legal moves yet against an individual cracker rather than a piracy site or distribution service.
The court has not yet ruled on Denuvo’s request for expedited discovery. If permission is granted, the resulting subpoenas could give the company access to account records capable of narrowing down the defendant’s identity, although there is no guarantee that the information will lead to a specific person. The case therefore remains at an early stage, with Denuvo first needing to establish who it is actually suing before the broader claims can proceed.
