The golden age of dungeon crawlers may have passed decades ago, but their influence continues to inspire modern indie developers. With players seeking fast-paced combat, rewarding exploration, and retro-inspired design, the genre has seen a quiet but steady resurgence in recent years.

First-person dungeon crawler Hollowdeep is now available on Steam. Indie developer Kyle Burgin released Hollowdeep on 19 September 2025 — a PS1-inspired, first-person dungeon crawler that emphasizes fast-paced combat and parry-focused system.

The game is available now on Steam with a 10% introductory discount (now £3.05, down from £3.39) through 25 September 2025, and a free demo can be downloaded from the store page.

Importance: Hollowdeep Steam launch underscores the growing impact of indie games in revealing retro dungeon crawlers and innovative combat mechanics.

    Combat And Exploration Mechanics

Hollowdeep is a single-player action/adventure RPG developed by Kyle Burgin that channels old-school PS1-era dungeon crawlers into a modern, fast-paced first-person experience.

The core combat centers on parrying— most enemy attacks (including projectiles) can be parried to knock enemies back and open them up for follow ups— and successful parries restore mana, letting players chain spellcasting into combat and exploration.

The game promises “loads of spells,” many with uses beyond combat: players can discover upgrades such as rings, new spells, weapons, and moveset upgrades that unlock previously inaccessible zones.

    Controller And Platform Support

Hollowdeep’s Steam listing shows 7 Steam achievements (examples include Kill the Skeleton Lord, Kill the Goblin Lord, and Destroy the Heart of the Castle), plus modern conveniences like full controller support (Xbox and PlayStation controllers), Steam Achievements and Cloud, and Family Sharing.

Hollowdeep’s Steam page features tags like Dungeon Crawler, Exploration, and Hack & Slash, along with a trailer, screenshots, demo, and purchase option. It supports English (interface, audio, subtitles), has a Mature Content warning, and modest system requirements.

With Windows 10/11, quad-core CPU, 8 GB RAM, 2 GB GPU, 1 GB storage. Steam Deck compatibility is unknown, and the game currently has 2 user reviews.
