Fortnite Kingdom Key Has Epic and Mythic Variants in v42.20

Fortnite’s Kingdom Key is now live as a usable Battle Royale weapon following the v42.20 update, expanding the Kingdom Hearts crossover beyond skins and cosmetic Keyblades. New gameplay shared by ShiinaBR shows the item appearing in both Epic and Mythic variants, giving players more than one rarity of Sora’s signature weapon to find during matches. Epic Games’ official v42.20 notes confirm the Kingdom Key has been added to the loot pool, although Epic has not publicly detailed the rarity differences between the two versions.

The Kingdom Key combines melee attacks with a ranged lightning ability rather than functioning as a simple reskinned harvesting tool. Epic describes the weapon as capable of unleashing a flurry of melee combos and calling down a shocking bolt on opponents. That lightning attack matches the Thundaga spell shown in the Kingdom Hearts crossover trailer before the update went live.

Earlier footage had already established that the weapon includes multiple attack options. Sora was shown striking enemies with close-range Keyblade attacks, performing a spinning move and rushing forward with the weapon before using lightning magic. The crossover trailer therefore gave players a broad idea of how the item would work, but the live release now confirms its place as a normal gameplay pickup rather than something restricted to promotional footage.

The newly surfaced rarity information adds an important detail that was not clear from Epic’s pre-release material. Before launch, the Kingdom Key was primarily described as a Mythic weapon, including in footage surrounding the Kingdom Hearts reveal. ShiinaBR’s live gameplay now indicates that an Epic version can also be obtained, potentially making the weapon more widely accessible than a single unique Mythic drop.

It is not yet clear how the Epic and Mythic Kingdom Keys differ statistically. Datamined information published before v42.20 pointed to damage values, durability, mobility and a lightning attack, but Epic’s current update notes do not provide separate numbers for each rarity. The existence of two variants therefore appears confirmed through live gameplay, while the exact damage, cooldown or durability differences still need to be established through testing or additional game data.

The Kingdom Key had been building toward a gameplay role throughout the crossover’s rollout. Fortnite files previously contained unique Kingdom Key and Thundaga elimination messages, indicating that the Keyblade would function as a combat item rather than only as a cosmetic. Later datamines also exposed early Kingdom Key combat statistics and abilities ahead of the update.

Epic then formally confirmed the weapon through Fortnite’s in-game messaging, with the Kingdom Key identified as a Battle Royale weapon before v42.20 went live. The official Season 4 announcement had also promised the Kingdom Hearts item for later in Override, alongside other crossover weapons such as Rebecca’s Guns from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

The Kingdom Hearts crossover itself brings Sora, Riku, Kairi and Roxas into Fortnite, with each character receiving their associated Keyblade as a cosmetic harvesting tool. Sora’s Kingdom Key is different because it also exists independently as a Battle Royale weapon. Epic’s trailer showed the Kingdom Key casting Thundaga, separating the functional weapon from the cosmetic version sold with the crossover.

Fortnite v42.20 also adds Rebecca’s Guns, Sea Salt Ice Cream, refreshed Loot Hacks, new Match Overrides and additional Sprite-related changes. Epic says Sea Salt Ice Cream restores health and shields for the user and nearby teammates, while Rebecca’s Guns arrive as a dual-wielded Assault Rifle and SMG combination with an Exotic variant offering ricocheting bullets.

With the update now live, the Kingdom Key has moved from one of Season 4’s promised crossover items into the active Battle Royale loot pool. The biggest new detail is that players are not limited to a single Mythic form, with live gameplay showing an Epic variant alongside it. Further testing should clarify exactly how the two versions differ in damage and other combat properties.
