Epic Games has temporarily removed affected Unvaulted Battle Pass cosmetics from the Fortnite Item Shop after identifying an ownership-display bug. Fortnite Status confirmed on September 5 that some returning Battle Pass items could incorrectly appear as “Owned” when a player already possessed a different variant of the same item. Epic is investigating the problem and has not yet announced when the affected cosmetics will return.
The issue concerns Fortnite’s relatively new Unvaulted system, which allows qualifying cosmetics from expired Battle Passes to return to the Item Shop. According to Epic, the bug can occur when a player owns one variant associated with a returning cosmetic, causing another shop offering to be incorrectly treated as if it is already in the player’s Locker. Rather than leaving the affected listings live while the problem persists, Epic has pulled them during its investigation.
That makes the problem particularly relevant to players trying to purchase recently returned Battle Pass cosmetics. Several Chapter 2 Remix cosmetics recently appeared through the Unvaulted section, including outfits covered as part of the return of Chapter 2 Remix Battle Pass skins. Fortnite’s web Item Shop currently maintains a dedicated Unvaulted category for older Battle Pass content alongside the game’s normal rotating cosmetic sections.

Epic did not say that players have permanently lost cosmetics they previously purchased or unlocked. The problem described by Fortnite Status specifically concerns how ownership is represented for some shop items when another variant is already owned. Epic also has not announced refunds, compensation or any Locker changes connected to the issue, so players should not assume the temporary removal means previously acquired content is being revoked.
The situation stems from Fortnite’s changed approach to Battle Pass exclusivity. Epic announced in 2024 that items from future Battle Passes could become eligible for Item Shop release at least 18 months after their original pass expires. Eligible content can include outfits, Back Blings, Pickaxes, Emotes, wraps and other cosmetic types, although Epic does not guarantee that every Battle Pass reward will eventually return.
Alternate styles introduce another layer to those returning offers. Epic’s policy states that the number of alternate styles offered when a Battle Pass cosmetic reaches the Shop can vary, while players may be able to purchase included styles alongside the base item if they do not already own it. That structure helps explain why accurately distinguishing ownership between individual variants is important when older cosmetics are repackaged for sale.
The current issue arrives shortly after a broader wave of Remix cosmetics began appearing in Fortnite’s shop rotation. Datamined material had previously pointed to Remix Battle Pass bundles arriving around September 4, alongside other additions to the Item Shop. Those releases expanded the number of older pass cosmetics being offered under Fortnite’s newer eligibility rules.
Epic’s public Item Shop also shows the Unvaulted category as a distinct section rather than treating these cosmetics as ordinary first-time releases. That distinction is important because returning Battle Pass content can involve players who already possess the base outfit, one or more styles, or related items from the original pass. A shop ownership system therefore needs to account for substantially more combinations than a completely new cosmetic bundle.
This is not the first time Epic has temporarily altered Fortnite content while correcting a live-service problem. The company regularly uses Fortnite Status to acknowledge issues affecting matchmaking, cosmetics, purchases and gameplay before deploying a fix or restoring affected features. In this case, removing the problematic offers prevents players from continuing to encounter incorrect ownership information while the underlying shop logic is investigated.
Epic has not provided a timetable for resolving the bug. Fortnite Status said only that the affected Unvaulted Battle Pass items are being removed while the team investigates, meaning their absence should be considered temporary unless Epic announces otherwise. Players waiting to purchase one of the affected cosmetics will need to wait for the listings to return after the ownership issue is corrected.
