Gray Zone Warfare’s next major update is planned for fall 2026 and will add a player hideout, crafting, drug-smuggling missions, multiple playable characters and several new locations across Lamang.
The details come from a Gamescom interview between Insider Gaming and developer MADFINGER Games, which outlined a much broader picture of Update 0.5 than the studio has publicly shared so far.
MADFINGER has separately confirmed that Update 0.5 is planned for later this year, but the Gamescom discussion provides new specifics about what players can expect from it.
One of the biggest additions is the first version of a personal hideout.
Players will be able to gather resources, construct modules and gradually build out their own space. The system also introduces crafting, with the hideout designed as more than just a cosmetic base.
According to the Gamescom preview, it will eventually connect to Gray Zone Warfare’s endgame and the mystery surrounding Ground Zero.
The hideout will include a chemical lab that opens up a new set of missions.
One early task has vendor Lab Rat asking players to produce medical-grade morphine. Later, Vulture can task players with crafting narcotics and transporting valuable drug shipments across Lamang.
Those deliveries are described as high-risk, high-reward activities, creating situations where players may have to defend valuable cargo while moving through the open world.
Artisan will also make use of the hideout through a micro lab.
Players will be able to reverse-engineer and salvage high-end military technology recovered around Lamang, with some of those rare items potentially feeding into black-market trading.
Update 0.5 is also making the world itself denser.
MADFINGER showed several new areas during Gamescom, including Radar, a large installation built around a deteriorating radar tower with bunkers beneath it.
Another new location, Asylum, leans further into the darker side of Lamang’s history, while Military Camp sits near the border of Ground Zero and is intended to offer high-tier loot alongside more dangerous enemies.
The update will also introduce multiple playable characters.
Players will be able to create or control a PMC associated with each faction, making it easier to play with friends who previously chose different factions.
Progression between PvE and PvEvP is also being separated.
That means players will no longer be able to build up their inventory in the lower-risk PvE environment and then transfer the same equipment directly into PvEvP.
MADFINGER appears to be using the change to make progression in each mode more self-contained and preserve the intended risk level of competitive play.
Update 0.5 also represents a development milestone for Gray Zone Warfare itself.
According to Insider Gaming’s Gamescom interview, the patch will move the game from its current pre-alpha stage into alpha.
The game originally entered Steam Early Access in April 2024 and has continued to receive major systems overhauls since then.
Its most recent large update, Spearhead 0.4, arrived in March 2026 and reworked progression, vendors, the economy and other core systems.
MADFINGER has since continued releasing smaller patches while preparing the next major step.
The developer has not announced an exact release date for Update 0.5 beyond its current fall 2026 window.
For now, the Gamescom reveal makes clear that the update is expanding far beyond a conventional content drop.
Hideouts, crafting, smuggling, faction flexibility, separated progression and new high-risk locations all point toward a deeper version of Gray Zone Warfare’s open-world tactical sandbox as development moves closer to its longer-term vision for Lamang and Ground Zero.
