Indie gaming storefront itch.io has confirmed removing several terabytes of AI-generated content as the platform faces a sharp increase in new game listings. On November 3, 2026, the company revealed the cleanup through its official Bluesky account, alongside expanded AI-disclosure requirements and new filtering options intended to help users navigate potentially AI-generated projects.

The moderation efforts follow itch.io’s November 1 disclosure that the number of new game pages created daily has doubled over the past two months. Data shared by the storefront shows daily page creation rising from approximately 3,000 in early August to regularly exceeding 6,000 by late October 2026.

However, that increase has not translated into an equivalent rise in player activity. In a follow-up response, itch.io confirmed that downloads and purchases have not doubled alongside the number of newly created pages.

Although the company has strongly suggested that generative AI is contributing to the surge, it has not provided a precise breakdown showing how many additional projects were created using AI tools. The figures also concern newly created game pages rather than necessarily representing completed, publicly released games.

The growing volume of submissions creates a potential discovery problem for independent developers. With significantly more projects competing for attention, players browsing newly added games may encounter greater difficulty identifying original releases, particularly when low-effort or automatically generated projects appear alongside conventional indie games.

Itch.io has also confirmed deleting approximately two terabytes of AI-generated material. The announcement establishes that the platform is actively removing substantial quantities of content, although the company has not specified how many projects were affected or whether every removal involved publicly visible game listings.

Alongside the cleanup, itch.io is expanding its AI-disclosure requirements to additional content categories, including tabletop games, books, comics and soundtracks. These requirements extend the platform’s existing approach to AI transparency beyond video games and game-development assets.

The storefront has also introduced a filtering option that allows users to exclude content carrying AI disclosures from search results. The feature offers players a more direct way to narrow their browsing experience without requiring a platform-wide prohibition on AI-assisted projects.

The scale of the filtering difference is notable. GamingOnLinux documented approximately 153,734 results when browsing Linux games, compared with 43,057 results after enabling the option to exclude AI-disclosed content. Those figures illustrate a substantial difference in visible listings, although they should not be interpreted as a direct count of AI-generated games because filtering can also exclude content without an AI disclosure.

Itch.io’s published creator guidelines already discourage the mass production of automatically generated or AI-generated project pages. The platform explicitly classifies excessive automated uploads as potential spam and warns that offending projects may be removed from browsing and search listings.

Developers are also asked to identify projects containing generative AI material through the AI Disclosure section of their project settings. This requirement distinguishes generative AI content from conventional game systems such as NPC behavior, procedural level generation and dynamic difficulty adjustment, which do not require the same disclosure.

The situation reflects a wider challenge for PC gaming storefronts as generative AI becomes increasingly common in game development. On Steam, nearly half of games released in October 2026 disclosed generative AI use, highlighting how prominently the technology now features in the independent gaming market.

For itch.io, the immediate concern is not simply whether developers use AI, but how the growing volume of submissions affects storefront quality and discoverability. Its latest removals, expanded disclosure requirements and filtering tools represent concrete attempts to address that challenge while continuing to accommodate independently published games.
