Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux are receiving a free next-gen update later this month, bringing a substantial set of visual, performance and platform upgrades to the two older games. Deep Silver and 4A Games announced the update alongside a new franchise milestone, confirming that Metro games have now sold 50 million copies worldwide. The PC update arrives on October 22, 2026, followed by PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions on October 29.
The update is not being positioned as a full remaster or remake. Instead, 4A Games says it is preserving the original look and atmosphere of Metro Redux while making targeted improvements for modern hardware. Both games will receive support for 4K textures across all platforms, alongside improved animation fidelity, higher-quality audio and more detailed environments.
Console players will see some of the most significant changes. Metro 2033 Redux and Last Light Redux will receive native PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S support, replacing the reliance on older backward-compatible versions. On supported hardware, players will be able to run the games at native 4K and 60 FPS or use an upscaled 4K mode targeting 120 FPS, provided their display supports the higher refresh rate.

Platform-specific additions go further than resolution and frame rate. PlayStation 5 Pro will support PSSR, while Xbox Series X will gain TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing support. Xbox versions will also support spatial audio, while both console families receive higher-quality lighting, shadows and particle effects. Hardware tessellation and runtime displacement are also being enabled on consoles, bringing parts of the rendering pipeline closer to what higher-end PC versions can offer.
Controller features are also part of the upgrade. PlayStation 5 players will get DualSense adaptive-trigger support, while Xbox players will receive impulse-trigger support. 4A Games is additionally adding a power-optimized mode on Xbox and support for PlayStation’s power-saving features, although full technical details for those modes have not yet been published.
PC players will receive a different set of improvements. The update adds Nvidia DLSS support as well as spatial audio, while 4A Games says it has also implemented community-requested bug fixes and quality-of-life changes. Full patch notes are being held until launch, meaning additional PC-specific improvements may still be revealed when the update goes live on October 22.
The update also expands how the games can be accessed within Microsoft’s ecosystem. Xbox Play Anywhere support is being added, along with Xbox Handheld support, allowing compatible purchases and saves to move more easily between supported Xbox and Windows devices. That gives the two 2014 Redux releases a much more modern platform foundation more than a decade after their original launch.
Existing owners will not need to repurchase either game. The update will be free for owners of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux on Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Windows Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Deep Silver says the Japanese console release will follow in November.
The technical refresh arrives as the Metro franchise reaches 50 million cumulative sales worldwide, 16 years after the original Metro 2033 launched. 4A Games described the milestone as a reflection of the community’s long-term support and tied the Redux upgrade directly to that anniversary. The timing also places renewed attention on the series ahead of Metro 2039, which is scheduled to launch on February 4, 2027.
Metro 2033 Redux and Last Light Redux were already enhanced versions of the first two games, but the upcoming update pushes them substantially closer to current-generation standards without replacing their underlying presentation. With 4K assets, higher frame-rate modes, DLSS, modern console features and a new round of bug fixes, the free upgrade should make both titles considerably easier to revisit on contemporary hardware.
