Modern Warfare 4 Beta Nerfs Aim Assist for Weekend 2

Infinity Ward has reduced aim assist strength in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta as part of its Weekend 2 update, while making clear that the current settings are not yet where the studio wants them for launch.

The change is confirmed in Infinity Ward’s official August 28 beta patch notes, which list aim assist among the key areas being adjusted following feedback from the first testing weekend.

Infinity Ward says the impact of aim assist has been reduced for Weekend 2, but also stresses that the current tuning is temporary. The studio plans to keep adjusting the values before Modern Warfare 4 launches.

The aim-assist changes are global, meaning they also apply to Warzone rather than being limited to standard Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer.

That makes the adjustment particularly important for controller players across both modes.

Aim assist became one of the most heavily discussed elements of the first beta weekend, with some players arguing that tracking strength was too aggressive during gunfights.

Infinity Ward had already confirmed before the Weekend 2 patch that it was reviewing the system alongside time-to-kill, movement, weapon balance and spawn behavior.

The new patch is the first time the studio has confirmed that the actual strength of aim assist has now been lowered in response.

Infinity Ward has not published numerical values showing exactly how much rotational aim assist or other individual components were reduced.

Instead, the developer describes the change more broadly as an adjustment intended to lessen aim assist’s overall impact.

That also means the current beta should not be treated as a final preview of controller aiming at launch.

Infinity Ward explicitly says this is not the exact tuning it ultimately wants and that further work will be done before release.

The change arrives alongside one of the largest balance passes of the beta so far.

Tactical Sprint has been removed from the default movement system and moved to the Blood Rush perk, while slide distance and slide speed have both been reduced.

Stamina has also been lowered, while pistol and knife sprint speeds have been increased.

Infinity Ward is separately adjusting weapon balance to slightly increase time-to-kill without raising the game’s base health.

The studio says it preferred individual weapon tuning because simply increasing health could make weapons feel too weak at longer ranges.

Spawn logic has also received changes following feedback from Weekend 1, while Infinity Ward continues to work on Killstreak balance and other multiplayer systems.

Taken together, the changes show the studio is using the beta as an active tuning period rather than simply a network test.

Aim assist is especially significant because cross-input balance remains a recurring issue across competitive shooters.

Controller players rely on aim assist to compensate for the limitations of analog sticks compared with mouse aiming, but overly strong tracking can create complaints from both mouse-and-keyboard players and controller users who feel too much of the aiming process is automated.

Infinity Ward’s current approach appears to be reducing that assistance without committing to a final value until it has more data from the open beta.

Modern Warfare 4’s Open Beta Weekend 2 began on August 28 and includes multiplayer alongside the first Warzone Resurgence beta on the new Zodiac map.

The beta runs until September 1 at 10 a.m. PT.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

For now, the key point is that the aim-assist nerf is live, but Infinity Ward considers it another testing step rather than the final controller aiming model players will see at launch.
