Konami has announced Rhapsody in Scarlet, a new magick action-adventure game coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The game made its debut during Sony’s September 3 State of Play with an announcement trailer introducing protagonist Ellie Myers, a supernatural version of 1920s New York and a combat system built around combining her abilities with magical beasts. Konami has not announced a release date.

Rhapsody in Scarlet places Ellie in New York during the 1920s, blending recognizable period architecture and fashion with an alternate world in which magick and supernatural creatures exist alongside everyday life. Konami describes Ellie as a magus who becomes involved in a journey to confront a threat capable of affecting the wider world. The first trailer moves between city streets, interiors and more fantastical environments as that conflict begins to emerge.

Combat appears to be a major focus rather than a secondary element of the adventure. Ellie can attack enemies directly with magick while working alongside beasts that enter encounters with their own attacks and abilities. Konami says players will be able to build combos by combining those different elements, suggesting the relationship between Ellie and her creatures will form an important part of the action system.

The trailer shows several varieties of supernatural companions fighting alongside Ellie rather than functioning solely as passive summons. Different creatures appear to provide different offensive options, while Ellie can continue moving and attacking during encounters. Konami has not yet explained whether players will capture, recruit or permanently collect these beasts, or how their abilities can be upgraded and customized.

The game’s setting is equally prominent in its reveal. Instead of using a conventional medieval fantasy world, Rhapsody in Scarlet places its magick within the jazz-era streets of 1920s New York. That gives the project a visual identity built around period clothing, vehicles and buildings mixed with supernatural effects and creatures, with the announcement footage moving between relatively grounded urban areas and scenes where the fantasy elements become considerably more pronounced.

Ellie herself remains largely unexplained beyond her role as a magus. The announcement establishes that she is drawn into a potentially world-threatening conflict, but Konami has not yet identified the antagonist, explained the origins of the game’s magick or detailed how its supernatural society operates. Supporting characters visible in the footage likewise have not received extensive introductions.

The reveal is notable for Konami because Rhapsody in Scarlet is a new property rather than another return to one of the publisher’s established franchises. Much of Konami’s recent console output has centered on brands such as Silent Hill, Metal Gear and Castlevania, alongside projects including Rev. NOiR. Rhapsody in Scarlet gives the company another original console game built around a new setting, cast and combat system.

Its multiplatform release also means the State of Play appearance does not indicate PlayStation exclusivity. Konami has confirmed versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S alongside PC, although specific PC storefront information and any differences between the platforms have not yet been fully detailed. Previous-generation PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions have not been announced.

The initial trailer is primarily an introduction, leaving several major questions unanswered. Konami has not detailed the structure of the world, whether exploration is linear or open-ended, how progression works, or how many beasts Ellie can use. It is also unclear whether players will be able to freely swap between companions during battle or construct a predefined loadout before entering encounters.

Rhapsody in Scarlet is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. No release date has been announced. For now, its first showing establishes a 1920s New York setting, protagonist Ellie Myers and a fast-moving combat system centered on chaining magick together with supernatural beast companions.
