STALKER 2 Multiplayer Is Still in Development, GSC Confirms

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl’s promised multiplayer mode is still in active development, GSC Game World has confirmed, although the studio is not ready to provide a release window.

The update comes from Gamescom 2026, where GSC Game World representatives told Insider Gaming that work on multiplayer remains ongoing.

GSC did not provide new gameplay details or an estimated launch date, but the confirmation is significant because multiplayer was originally promised as a free post-launch update and has remained absent since STALKER 2 released.

The studio’s official support documentation still states that multiplayer is planned to arrive as a free update after launch.

That commitment dates back to before STALKER 2’s November 2024 release, when GSC said it intended to introduce multiplayer sometime after the single-player game became available.

Almost two years later, players are still waiting for the mode.

The lack of a public timeline had raised questions over whether multiplayer remained part of GSC’s plans, particularly as the studio continued prioritizing patches, A-Life improvements and new single-player content.

The latest Gamescom confirmation answers the most important part of that question: the mode has not been cancelled.

GSC representatives Maria and Ievgen reportedly told Insider Gaming directly that multiplayer is still coming, but declined to say when players should expect it.

That means the project remains in development rather than being quietly dropped from STALKER 2’s post-launch plans.

Exactly what form the multiplayer mode will take is still unclear.

GSC has never publicly provided a detailed breakdown of its rules, player count, progression systems or whether multiplayer will focus on competitive or cooperative gameplay.

The studio’s official material simply describes it as a multiplayer mode arriving through a free update.

Players should therefore be cautious about assuming the feature will allow full cooperative exploration of STALKER 2’s single-player open world.

Nothing GSC has announced so far confirms campaign co-op or the ability to explore the Zone with friends in the same way as the main story.

Since launch, GSC has focused heavily on improving STALKER 2’s existing systems.

Major updates have targeted the game’s A-Life simulation, NPC behavior, weapon balance, performance, bugs and quality-of-life issues.

The studio has also added substantial free content.

The Stories Untold update, released in December 2025, added more than five hours of new gameplay depending on player pace, including eight missions, seven locations, six characters and additional equipment.

Earlier updates also expanded A-Life behavior so NPCs could continue operating beyond the player’s immediate view, while introducing new encounters, weapons and balance changes.

That workload helps explain why GSC is still unwilling to attach a date to multiplayer.

The studio is continuing to support a large open-world game while simultaneously working on additional features that were not present at launch.

For players who bought STALKER 2 expecting multiplayer to eventually arrive, the Gamescom statement is at least a clear reassurance that development continues.

It is not, however, an announcement that the mode is close to release.

Until GSC reveals gameplay, a roadmap placement or a launch window, multiplayer remains one of STALKER 2’s largest outstanding post-launch features.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

GSC Game World has not announced when the free multiplayer update will launch, but the studio’s latest comments confirm that it remains part of the game’s future.
