Steam generated an estimated $1.7 billion in gross revenue during September 2026, making it the platform’s strongest September on record, according to new figures from Alinea Analytics. The estimate represents a 13% increase over September 2025, which previously held the record. Steam also posted what Alinea estimates was its best third quarter ever, with $5.5 billion in revenue, up 12% year over year.

That brings Steam’s estimated revenue for the first nine months of 2026 to $16.5 billion, compared with roughly $14.5 billion during the same period in 2025. Valve does not publish monthly Steam revenue figures, so the numbers are third-party estimates rather than company-reported financial results. Alinea analyst Rhys Elliott said the platform is now positioned to exceed $20 billion in annual revenue for the first time if the remaining months maintain the current pace.

September’s performance was driven by a mix of new releases, established franchises and long-running free-to-play games. Among Steam’s 500 highest-grossing titles during the month, new IP released in 2026 accounted for 20.5% of revenue, while established IP represented 79.5%. Remakes and remasters alone contributed 3.8% of revenue within that group, showing that older franchises continue to make up a significant portion of Steam spending.

Wardogs was one of the month’s most successful new launches. Alinea estimates the shooter generated $86.9 million on Steam after entering Early Access on September 10. Onimusha: Way of the Sword generated an estimated $30.4 million, The Blood of Dawnwalker reached $26.9 million, Bodycam brought in $24.2 million and EA Sports FC 27 contributed an estimated $20.7 million during September.

Free-to-play games also remained a major part of Steam’s business. Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, PUBG and Dota 2 generated almost $168 million combined during the month, according to Alinea’s estimates. That total alone is close to 10% of Steam’s estimated September revenue, highlighting how much spending on established live-service games continues to contribute alongside new premium releases.

Steam is simultaneously heading toward another annual record in the number of games released on the platform. As of October 1, 20,220 games had launched on Steam during 2026, according to release-tracking data cited by Tom’s Hardware. Another 1,156 titles were scheduled for October at the time, which would push the platform beyond the 21,268 games released during 2025 if those launches proceed as planned.

The release volume illustrates how crowded Steam has become for developers, even as overall spending continues to rise. More games are competing for visibility than ever, while a relatively small number of high-performing titles still account for a substantial share of revenue. Alinea’s breakdown suggests that established franchises and back-catalogue releases remain especially important, rather than Steam’s growth being driven purely by newly released games.

The numbers are also notable because they arrive during a period of elevated PC hardware costs. Memory pricing and other component pressures have made new gaming-PC builds and upgrades more expensive in 2026, but there is little indication so far that those costs have meaningfully reduced software spending across Steam. Players appear to be continuing to buy games and make in-game purchases even as the hardware required to run them becomes more expensive.

Valve has also continued expanding Steam beyond conventional desktop and laptop PCs. The Steam Deck established a dedicated handheld audience for the platform, while Valve has been pushing further into living-room and SteamOS-based hardware. Those efforts broaden the ecosystem in which Steam purchases can be used without changing the core storefront model.

With $16.5 billion already estimated for the first nine months of the year, Steam would need less than $3.5 billion across the final quarter to pass $20 billion. Alinea expects the remaining 2026 release schedule to keep spending elevated, although the final figure will remain an estimate unless Valve publishes its own platform revenue data. Even with that limitation, September’s results point to continued growth in PC game spending despite an increasingly expensive hardware market and an unprecedented number of games competing for players’ attention.
