World of Warcraft: Forever will launch on November 4, 2026, with official controller support, allowing PC players to explore Azeroth using a gamepad without relying on third-party controller addons. The feature, currently designated Gamepad (Alpha), introduces controller-specific interface elements, customizable action bar layouts and alternative methods for navigating the game’s menus and combat systems.
Microsoft detailed the feature in a November 2 Xbox Wire article written by editor Mike Nelson, who described using the controller interface across desktop PCs, living-room setups and a Windows gaming handheld. The article confirms that Gamepad (Alpha) support will be available when Forever launches later this week.
Official controller support was originally demonstrated during BlizzCon in September, making the November 2 article a closer look at an existing feature rather than its initial announcement. Blizzard has continued refining the system throughout the game’s beta testing period.

Players can enable the feature through the game’s Options menu by selecting Gamepad (Alpha). Once activated, the interface changes its on-screen button prompts to match controller inputs, allowing players to navigate character information, inventory, quests and other standard game functions.
The combat system uses combinations of controller triggers, bumpers and face buttons to access different abilities. Pressing the shoulder controls changes which actions are assigned to the available buttons, allowing players to execute attacks, cast spells and use other skills without requiring a traditional keyboard layout.
Nelson described becoming comfortable with the system during his time playing Forever, particularly because the game’s combat pacing gave him opportunities to manage abilities through the controller. His account reflects personal experience with the beta rather than a formal assessment of controller performance across every class or activity.
Blizzard has also introduced additional gamepad features during testing. Its October 26 beta development notes document class-specific action bar flyouts for Druid shapeshifting, Hunter and Warlock pets, Paladin auras and Warrior stances.
The same update added a Compact Action Bar option, which displays only the currently active controller action bar to reduce interface clutter. Another setting, Fixed Party Targeting, lets players assign individual party members to directional-pad buttons when playing in non-raid groups.
Communication remains one area where conventional PC inputs can be useful. Xbox Wire’s hands-on account describes a controller-accessible ping system activated by holding the right analog stick, with commands including Attack, Warning, On My Way and Assist. However, Nelson found that a keyboard or voice chat remained preferable for more detailed communication with other players.
The controller implementation also creates possibilities for playing World of Warcraft on handheld Windows PCs. Nelson tested Forever on the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, using its touchscreen and on-screen keyboard to activate Gamepad (Alpha) before adjusting the interface through Edit Mode.
He found the game playable using the handheld’s integrated controls after completing the initial configuration. However, the article explicitly notes that this handheld setup is not officially supported, and the experience should not be interpreted as a guarantee of compatibility across all portable gaming devices.
The addition is particularly relevant as more PC games accommodate controller-based and handheld play. Other older PC releases have also received modern control improvements, including the upgraded Steam and GOG releases of Ecstatica and Ecstatica II, which introduced controller support alongside compatibility improvements.
Unlike previous World of Warcraft controller configurations that relied on community addons, Forever provides an integrated interface developed by Blizzard. Although World of Warcraft already had underlying gamepad functionality, the dedicated Gamepad (Alpha) interface represents a more complete built-in approach to controller navigation and gameplay.
The Alpha designation remains important. Blizzard is continuing to develop the feature, and its availability at launch does not mean every controller interaction has reached a finalized state. The announcement also does not establish an Xbox console release for World of Warcraft: Forever.
World of Warcraft: Forever launches for PC on November 4, 2026. The new experience revisits the original game’s Azeroth with additional content, updated visuals and new playable options, including the Skyborne race and its starting location on Zephras Isle.
Forever will be included with an existing World of Warcraft subscription, with Gamepad (Alpha) available as an alternative input option for players who prefer controllers over traditional keyboard-and-mouse controls.
