Xbox Launches Backward Compatibility for Original Games on PC

Xbox has officially launched Backward Compatibility on PC, bringing selected original Xbox games to Windows computers and gaming handhelds for the first time. The initiative begins with four titles and represents the start of a broader effort to preserve older Xbox games while making them accessible across more devices.

The early-release catalogue includes *Blinx: The Time Sweeper*, *Conker: Live and Reloaded*, *Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge*, and *Fuzion Frenzy*. Players can download the games through the Xbox app on supported Windows PCs and handhelds, including the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.

All four games are available for individual purchase and are included with every Xbox Game Pass plan. More importantly, players who already own a digital console licence for one of the supported games will not have to buy it again. The licence carries over to PC and compatible handheld devices through Xbox Play Anywhere. Xbox Cloud Gaming also allows supported users to access the titles across console, PC, handheld and cloud-connected devices.

That cross-device entitlement is one of the initiative’s most important features. Traditional backward compatibility has largely focused on allowing newer consoles to run games made for older hardware. Microsoft is now extending that concept to Windows, potentially giving older console purchases a longer lifespan while strengthening the connection between Xbox consoles, PCs and handheld gaming systems.

Microsoft has also added several PC-specific improvements while retaining the original gameplay. Players can enable VSync, use fullscreen or windowed display modes and increase resolution by up to four times the original output. The releases also support anisotropic filtering, enhanced anti-aliasing and adjustable language and audio settings.

Achievements are not available at launch, but Xbox says they will be added to the first four games in the coming months. The company also plans to introduce achievements to selected original Xbox games on both PC and console later in 2026, addressing one of the most frequently requested additions from players revisiting older titles.

The system requirements are relatively modest by current gaming-PC standards. Xbox lists an Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, Intel UHD 770 or Intel Arc A310 as the minimum graphics hardware. Players will also need at least a four-core Intel Core i3-8100, AMD Ryzen 3 1200 or comparable processor, along with 8GB of RAM. Windows 11 is mandatory.

Xbox recommends stronger hardware, including a six-core Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 and a graphics card such as the Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti or Intel Arc A770. The company also recommends 8GB of video memory and DirectX 12 support.

Jason Ronald, Xbox’s vice president of next generation, described the launch as “the beginning of a broader effort” to preserve older Xbox games and gradually bring them to PC. That wording makes clear that the initial four-game release is a test rather than the final scope of the programme.

The next major question is how quickly Microsoft can expand the catalogue and whether licensing restrictions will limit which games return. For now, the initiative gives PC and handheld players an official way to access four notable original Xbox releases, with additional games and features expected as the preview develops.
