Xbox Disc-to-Digital Works With Some Delisted Games

Xbox’s new Disc-to-Digital feature has started rolling out to Xbox Insiders, and early testing has revealed that some games removed from the Microsoft Store can still receive digital licenses from their physical discs. Microsoft officially began testing the feature on August 31, allowing owners of supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X games to add digital entitlements to their libraries by inserting their discs into a compatible console.

Microsoft first announced Disc-to-Digital on August 26 as part of what it described as a broader commitment to game preservation. The company says most disc-based Xbox One and Xbox Series X games are eligible, with thousands of titles supported during the initial testing period and more expected to be added over time. Not every game currently participates, however, so support varies depending on the title.

For compatible games, players insert the physical disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launch the game to claim its digital entitlement. The resulting digital version can provide benefits normally associated with owning a game digitally, including Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where those features are supported. The original physical disc also continues to function normally.

The more notable discovery since the Insider rollout began is that delisted games are not automatically excluded. Players testing the system have successfully received digital licenses for physical copies of titles no longer available for new digital purchases through the Xbox Store. Video Games Chronicle reports that confirmed examples currently include Deadpool, F1 2021, Minecraft: Story Mode, Rock Band 4 and the original Titanfall.

That distinction matters because delisting normally prevents new customers from purchasing a game digitally, even though existing digital owners can generally continue downloading it. Disc-to-Digital appears capable of granting an entitlement when an eligible physical copy is used even after the game’s store listing has been removed. In practice, that could make certain older physical collections usable on Xbox hardware without disc drives, provided each title participates in the program.

Support is far from universal at this stage. Xbox has explicitly said that not every title will be available at launch, while Insider testing has already produced community-made compatibility databases documenting games that do and do not work. Reports from testers suggest some publishers currently have few or no compatible releases, meaning possession of a physical Xbox disc alone does not guarantee a digital entitlement.

Microsoft has indicated that the compatibility list can continue changing during testing. Brad Rossetti of the Xbox Insider team told testers that games which are not currently supported may become compatible later, advising users to retain their discs and try them again in the future. That makes the current compatibility situation provisional rather than a final list of which physical games will receive digital versions.

The feature also has implications beyond simply avoiding disc swapping. Xbox Series S and the digital Xbox Series X lack optical drives, so converting an eligible physical game into a digital entitlement can potentially make an existing disc collection usable on those systems. Games that support Xbox Play Anywhere may additionally become accessible on supported Windows PCs, while compatible titles can gain access through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

For delisted releases, the preservation angle is particularly significant. A physical copy can remain obtainable through the second-hand market long after a game disappears from digital storefronts, while the digital version can offer more flexibility across Microsoft’s current ecosystem. The early results do not mean every delisted Xbox game has effectively returned, but they demonstrate that removal from the store does not by itself prevent a title from participating.

Disc-to-Digital remains an Xbox Insider feature for now, so Microsoft is still collecting feedback before a wider rollout. The company has not published a definitive compatibility list or a date for when the system will become available to all Xbox users. Early testing nevertheless shows that the program extends beyond currently sold games, giving at least some delisted physical releases a new route into players’ digital libraries.
