GTA VI Is Currently Running at 30FPS on Consoles

Grand Theft Auto VI is currently running at 30 frames per second on consoles during development, while Rockstar Games has not confirmed whether a 60FPS performance mode will be available at launch.

The detail comes from Brazilian creator Davy Jones, who recently visited Rockstar North and discussed the game’s technical performance with Rockstar North head of development Rob Nelson. During the conversation, Nelson indicated that the current console builds are operating at 30FPS.

That distinction is important. Reports circulating online have described GTA VI as definitively being a “30FPS-only” game at launch, but Rockstar has not made that commitment publicly.

When asked about higher frame-rate options, Nelson said the technical team would need to provide a more definitive answer. He also indicated that Rockstar is not currently ready to confirm details surrounding resolution or a possible performance mode.

For now, then, 30FPS represents the game’s current console performance target rather than confirmation that every console version will permanently be locked to that frame rate.

The discussion comes immediately after Rockstar released GTA VI: An Extended Look, a roughly 26-minute gameplay presentation captured entirely from the PlayStation 5 version of the game.

That footage provided the clearest official look yet at GTA VI running on console hardware, showing dense city streets, heavy traffic, detailed crowds, police pursuits, interiors and large outdoor environments across Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.

The scale and density of those scenes may help explain why Rockstar is currently prioritizing a 30FPS presentation. GTA VI is attempting to simulate a significantly more populated and reactive world than GTA V, with greater NPC variety, more detailed environmental interactions and more complex systems operating simultaneously.

Nelson described 30FPS as strong performance considering everything happening on screen, while stopping short of promising a different mode for PlayStation 5 Pro or other hardware.

That leaves several important technical questions unanswered.

Rockstar has not confirmed the final rendering resolution for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S or PlayStation 5 Pro. It has also not detailed whether the game uses dynamic resolution scaling, reconstruction technologies or different graphical settings across the individual consoles.

There is likewise no official confirmation of a 40FPS mode for 120Hz displays or a 60FPS performance option with reduced visual settings.

The situation is consistent with Rockstar’s history of prioritizing visual complexity over higher frame rates during initial console launches. Grand Theft Auto V originally ran at 30FPS on its console releases, while Red Dead Redemption 2 also targeted 30FPS on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

GTA V later received higher-frame-rate modes on newer hardware, but that precedent does not confirm what Rockstar intends to do with GTA VI.

The newly released Extended Look is particularly relevant because Rockstar explicitly stated that the footage was captured on a standard PlayStation 5 rather than PlayStation 5 Pro hardware.

That gives players a useful indication of the visual target Rockstar is already achieving on the base console, even though the company has not disclosed the exact performance and resolution settings used for the recording.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date.

As development continues, the confirmed position is narrower than some of the headlines circulating online: GTA VI is currently running at 30FPS on console, while Rockstar has not yet committed publicly to either a 60FPS performance mode or the final technical specifications for each platform.
