Sony’s $7.85M PlayStation Settlement Awaits Final Approval

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s proposed $7.85 million settlement in a U.S. PlayStation digital-games antitrust lawsuit has received preliminary court approval, with a final fairness hearing scheduled for October 15, 2026. The case, Caccuri v. Sony Interactive Entertainment, alleges that Sony reduced competition in the digital PlayStation games market after third-party retailers stopped selling game-specific download vouchers in 2019. Sony denies wrongdoing, and the court has not ruled that the company violated the law.

The lawsuit argues that removing those third-party vouchers left the PlayStation Store as the only direct place to buy certain digital PlayStation games, allegedly allowing Sony to charge higher prices than consumers might otherwise have paid. Before the change, retailers including Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy, Walmart and others could sell game-specific digital codes, potentially competing through discounts and promotions. Plaintiffs claim the 2019 policy therefore harmed customers who later bought affected games directly through the PlayStation Store.

The proposed settlement covers eligible U.S. PlayStation users who purchased qualifying digital games between April 1, 2019 and December 31, 2023. According to court filings and settlement materials, approximately 4.4 million PlayStation Network accounts may fall within the settlement class. The eligible-games list spans numerous major franchises, although qualification depends on whether a title had previously been sold through game-specific vouchers and met the settlement’s other criteria.

If the settlement receives final approval, the $7.85 million fund will primarily be distributed as PlayStation Network account credits. Eligible users with active PSN accounts generally do not need to submit a separate claim to receive their share, because credits are expected to be added automatically according to the approved allocation plan. Former users with deactivated accounts had until August 27 to request payment by check instead.

The final amount each class member receives has not been fixed publicly because administrative expenses, legal fees and service awards must first be deducted from the settlement fund. The court will consider those issues at the October 15 fairness hearing alongside the broader question of whether the settlement is fair and reasonable. If final approval is granted and no appeals delay the process, payments would follow afterward under the settlement administrator’s timetable.

The case has taken several years to reach this stage. It was originally filed in 2021 and challenged Sony’s handling of digital PlayStation game sales under U.S. antitrust law. Earlier proposed settlement arrangements encountered court scrutiny before a revised agreement received preliminary approval in April 2026, moving the case toward its current final-hearing stage.

Sony’s position throughout the case has been that it did not break the law and that customers were not harmed by its digital-sales policies. The settlement therefore resolves the claims without an admission of liability. That distinction is important because preliminary approval does not amount to a finding that Sony monopolized the market or illegally overcharged PlayStation customers.

The U.S. case is separate from the much larger PlayStation competition lawsuit being pursued in the United Kingdom, which Techtroduce has previously covered in relation to [[LINK|https://www.techtroduce.com/playstation-lawsuit-uk/|potential multibillion-pound compensation for UK players]]. Sony has also faced separate legal scrutiny over the language surrounding digital ownership, including its argument that [[LINK|https://www.techtroduce.com/sony-playstation-digital-games-licensed-not-owned/|PlayStation digital purchases are licenses rather than outright ownership]].

For now, the $7.85 million settlement remains proposed rather than final. The next major step is the October 15, 2026 hearing in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, where the judge will decide whether to grant final approval to the deal and its allocation plan. Until then, eligible PlayStation users are part of a preliminarily approved settlement, not recipients of a finalized payout.
