Housemarque has announced the Zenith update for Saros, a substantial free content release arriving later in 2026. Revealed during Sony’s September 3 State of Play, the update adds a boss-rush mode called Overlord Rush, a New Game Plus experience known as Eclipse Layers, integrated leaderboards, new progression options, additional trophies and expanded accessibility settings. The update will be available at no additional cost to existing Saros players on PlayStation 5.
Overlord Rush is designed around fighting the game’s major Overlord enemies back-to-back rather than encountering them as part of the normal campaign structure. Players will attempt to survive consecutive boss battles while chasing high scores and comparing their performance through integrated global leaderboards. Housemarque says the mode is intended as a return to the arcade-style competition that has long been associated with the studio’s earlier games.
The second major addition, Eclipse Layers, functions as Saros’ New Game Plus mode. After completing the main game, players can begin again in a more demanding version of the campaign with additional progression options and new Carcosan Modifiers. Housemarque is also placing new secrets and trophies within Eclipse Layers, giving returning players reasons to explore beyond simply facing tougher versions of familiar encounters.

Carcosan Modifiers already form an important part of Saros’ difficulty system, allowing players to alter different aspects of each cycle. Protection Modifiers can make the experience more forgiving, while Trial Modifiers introduce additional challenges such as more aggressive enemies or other combat restrictions. Eclipse Layers will expand that framework with additional options intended specifically for experienced players who have already completed the campaign.
The Zenith update also expands Saros’ accessibility settings. One of the newly confirmed options allows players to slow the overall game speed, providing additional time to react during the shooter’s fast-moving encounters. Housemarque has not yet detailed every accessibility feature coming with Zenith, but Sony says additional visual and control options are part of the update as well.
That focus fits the broader approach Housemarque has already taken with Saros. The base game includes adjustable gameplay modifiers that can reduce or increase difficulty without completely replacing its core combat systems. Zenith builds on that flexibility by adding both a more demanding post-game challenge through Eclipse Layers and settings intended to make the action easier to follow and control.
Saros launched on PlayStation 5 in April 2026 as Housemarque’s first new game following Returnal. Players control Arjun Devraj, a Soltari Enforcer stranded on the planet Carcosa, where an ominous eclipse alters enemies, environments and the character’s repeated attempts to survive. The game retains Housemarque’s emphasis on high-speed projectile combat while introducing more persistent progression than Returnal.
Permanent upgrades are central to Saros’ “come back stronger” structure. Resources collected during cycles can be used to improve Arjun’s Armor Matrix, while weapons and other equipment can persist across deaths. The game also allows players to modify their experience through Carcosan settings, meaning the new Zenith systems are expanding mechanics that already exist rather than replacing Saros’ underlying progression.
Overlord Rush represents a more self-contained addition. By isolating the game’s bosses into a score-focused sequence, Housemarque is creating a mode aimed at players interested in mastery and repeat attempts rather than narrative progression. Global leaderboards should also give the mode a longer competitive lifespan as players optimize routes, equipment and combat strategies to improve their scores.
Housemarque has not announced an exact launch date for Zenith. Sony currently lists the update for later in 2026, meaning more detailed timing and a complete breakdown of its accessibility additions are still to come. The studio has likewise not specified whether additional balance changes, weapons or general quality-of-life improvements will accompany the new modes.
The Saros Zenith update will launch free for PS5 players later in 2026. With Overlord Rush, Eclipse Layers, new modifiers, leaderboards, trophies and expanded accessibility features, Housemarque is adding both a competitive arcade-style challenge and a more demanding post-game path for players who have already completed Carcosa’s main campaign.
