A proposed Miami-Dade County marketing partnership tied to Grand Theft Auto VI is now facing public opposition from local officials. County Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez and Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz issued a joint statement on September 3 calling on the county to reject the use of public resources and facilities to promote GTA VI. Their objections follow reports that county officials have discussed a collaboration with Rockstar Games that could include temporarily presenting Miami International Airport as “Vice City Airport.”

The proposal first emerged publicly in late August after local reporting detailed ideas for using Miami-Dade infrastructure around GTA VI’s November 19 launch. Those discussions included Vice City-themed branding at Miami International Airport, transit locations and other public spaces, alongside installations intended to connect the real Miami area with Rockstar’s fictional Vice City. The broader Miami-Dade and GTA VI partnership proposal has not been formally approved.

Bermudez said he opposes using county assets to promote what he described as a fictional version of Miami associated with crime and violence. He specifically questioned the possibility of temporarily rebranding Miami International Airport as Vice City Airport, arguing that Miami-Dade has spent decades establishing its reputation as a destination for tourism, business and investment. The commissioner also called for greater transparency around any negotiations, including potential costs, public benefits and the use of county resources.

Cordero-Stutz raised similar concerns from a law-enforcement perspective. She argued that Grand Theft Auto is built around activities such as robbery, carjacking, drug trafficking and violence against police, while the sheriff’s office works to combat those same crimes in the real county. Her position is that officially promoting Vice City through government facilities could send a conflicting message about Miami-Dade’s identity and priorities.

The dispute is significant because it moves the reported marketing talks beyond an unusual promotional concept and into an active debate within county government. The opposition is not coming from outside advocacy groups or commentators, but from an elected county commissioner and Miami-Dade’s sheriff. Both are now publicly asking the administration to reconsider any arrangement that would place GTA VI branding on publicly controlled property.

Reports about the proposal have described a much broader campaign than simply changing an airport sign. Concepts have included Vice City-themed airport areas, branded baggage facilities, transit installations, vehicle or aircraft displays and other public-facing activations. Some versions of the proposal also contemplated Rockstar funding improvements or installations that could remain useful to residents after the marketing campaign ended.

The key distinction is that none of those concepts are currently confirmed as final plans. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s office has acknowledged conversations surrounding potential opportunities connected to GTA VI, but reporting on the talks has consistently stated that nothing has been formally agreed upon or approved. Rockstar Games has also not publicly announced a Miami-Dade partnership.

That leaves the project at a politically sensitive stage. What began as an attempt to capitalize on the enormous attention surrounding GTA VI now requires county officials to weigh possible tourism and marketing revenue against concerns about attaching Miami-Dade’s government brand to Grand Theft Auto. The county’s own similarities to Vice City are central to the promotional appeal, but they are also the reason some officials object to making that connection official.

GTA VI is heavily inspired by South Florida, with Vice City serving as Rockstar’s fictional counterpart to Miami and the wider state of Leonida drawing from Florida. Rockstar has continued expanding its depiction of the region through official material, including new GTA VI screenshots showing Vice City and Leonida ahead of release.

The timing also makes the disagreement increasingly relevant for any potential campaign. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch November 19, 2026, leaving only a few months for a substantial county-wide promotional partnership to receive approval and be implemented. Public resistance from Bermudez and Cordero-Stutz could therefore influence whether the proposal moves forward, is reduced in scope or is abandoned altogether.

For now, Miami-Dade County has not approved the reported Vice City transformation, and Rockstar has not announced an agreement. What is confirmed is that the idea now has prominent opposition inside county government, turning the unusual GTA VI marketing proposal into a real dispute over how closely Miami-Dade should officially associate itself with Vice City.
