The Switch 2 has stirred immense anticipation worldwide as it’s set to follow one of the best-selling consoles in history. A key question on fans’ minds is whether the upcoming hybrid console will support backward compatibility with existing Switch titles.

It seems that fans are in luck as Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will be backward compatible with current Nintendo Switch titles.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa shared this in a post on X, along with an announcement that more details about the new console will be provided “at a later date.”

Importance: Backward compatibility is crucial for the Nintendo Switch 2, as it would allow players to enjoy their favorite games from the original Switch on the new console, greatly enhancing its appeal. This feature would give fans a seamless transition while building excitement for the Switch’s successor.

Furukawa’s statement also revealed that Nintendo Switch Online will be accessible on the new console. However, further details on how this service will function with the successor hardware have not been shared yet.

Earlier in the day, Nintendo reiterated its plans to unveil its next console hardware before the end of the current fiscal year, which closes on March 31, 2025. During an online press conference following the release of Nintendo’s latest earnings, Furukawa confirmed this timeline but refrained from adding more specifics.

Reports suggest that developers have been advised not to expect the new console’s release before April 2025.

A well-known journalist also reported that none of the developers he spoke with anticipated a launch within this fiscal year, with many hopeful for a release around April or May.

Having launched in March 2017, the Switch is now in its eighth year, making it Nintendo’s longest lasting home console before a successor release, surpassing the Famicom’s record in July.
