Nintendo has announced Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, bringing Monolith Soft’s RPG to the newer console on December 3, 2026. The upgraded release will run at 60 frames per second and support 4K resolution in TV mode, while handheld play targets 1080p. It also adds a new Hero and accompanying quest, a defensive battle mode and fully voiced event scenes.

Nintendo revealed the new edition as part of its September Nintendo Direct focused on Switch 2 games. Both digital and physical versions are scheduled for December 3, and players who already own Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on the original Switch will not need to purchase the entire game again. Nintendo will instead offer a separate upgrade pack that adds the Switch 2 enhancements and new content to an existing copy.

The technical upgrade is significant for a game built around the large open environments of Aionios. In TV mode, Nintendo says Xenoblade Chronicles 3 will support 4K resolution at 60 FPS, provided the connected display supports 4K output. Handheld mode will run at full HD resolution and 60 FPS, while cutscenes are also described as smoother and sharper than in the original Switch version.

The Switch 2 Edition is more than a resolution and frame-rate upgrade. Nintendo says players will be able to recruit an entirely new Hero through an additional Hero Quest, although the character’s identity and role have not yet been revealed. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 already uses Heroes as temporary seventh party members who can unlock additional classes for the main cast, so the new character should add another class and combat option to the existing system.

A new defensive battle mode is also included. Nintendo describes it as a challenge where players test their strength against waves of enemies, but has not yet detailed its progression structure, rewards or how it compares with the challenge modes introduced through the original game’s Expansion Pass. The mode will be exclusive to the Switch 2 version alongside the other newly announced additions.

Event scenes are receiving another notable upgrade, with Nintendo confirming that they will now be fully voiced in English and Japanese. The original game already features extensive voice acting throughout its main story, but some smaller event sequences were presented without complete spoken dialogue. The Switch 2 Edition will fill in those gaps while retaining the existing story centered on Noah, Mio and their companions.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 originally launched for Nintendo Switch in July 2022. Set in the war-torn world of Aionios, the RPG follows soldiers from the opposing nations of Keves and Agnus as they uncover the truth behind the endless conflict controlling their lives. Its combat combines real-time party management with character classes, interconnected Arts and the ability for paired characters to fuse into powerful Ouroboros forms.

The game later received an Expansion Pass containing additional Heroes, challenge content, outfits and Future Redeemed, a substantial story scenario connecting events across the wider Xenoblade Chronicles series. Nintendo has not indicated that the new Switch 2 Hero or defensive battle mode will require that Expansion Pass. The newly announced content is instead being presented as part of the Switch 2 Edition and its corresponding upgrade pack.

Nintendo lists the complete Switch 2 Edition at an estimated 42.6GB, while the standalone upgrade pack for existing owners is approximately 29.8GB. Save Data Cloud and amiibo support are also listed, and the game remains a single-player RPG.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launches digitally and physically on December 3. With 60 FPS performance, higher-resolution output and actual new gameplay content rather than technical improvements alone, the release gives existing players additional material to return for while offering Switch 2 owners a more capable version of Noah and Mio’s journey across Aionios.
