Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will launch on December 10, 2026, finally giving Level-5’s long-awaited puzzle adventure a firm release date. The date was announced during Nintendo’s September 9 presentation after the game had previously been scheduled only for late 2026. New World of Steam is planned for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam.

The announcement brings an end to a lengthy wait surrounding the next main Professor Layton adventure. The game was originally announced in February 2023 and was initially targeting 2025 before Level-5 delayed it to 2026 so the studio could continue refining the project. Earlier this year, the company narrowed that window to late 2026 while also confirming PS5 and PC versions alongside the previously announced Nintendo platforms.

The December date also gives more context to recent signs that development was nearing completion. Professor Layton and the New World of Steam achievements surfaced online ahead of the latest announcement, suggesting backend preparation for release was already underway. Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino had previously said the core gameplay was nearly finished, with the team focusing on visuals, presentation and international localization.

New World of Steam takes place one year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, also known as Lost Future in some regions. Professor Hershel Layton travels to Steam Bison, a rapidly developing American town powered by advanced steam technology, where he reunites with his former apprentice Luke Triton. Luke now lives in America and has earned a reputation around town for solving everyday mysteries, gaining the nickname “Great Detective Luke.”

The pair become caught up in another mysterious incident, forming the basis of the game’s new investigation. Level-5 has introduced a wider supporting cast around them, including inventor Eggmuffin Sonder, wealthy town leader Bolt Allinston, mechanic Elinora Allinston, aspiring actress Elida Allinston and Sheriff Bobsley. The setting is considerably more industrial than the London environments associated with earlier entries, with Steam Bison’s machinery and inventions playing an important role in its identity.

Puzzles remain central to the experience, with Level-5 collaborating with Japanese media group QuizKnock to create the game’s challenges. The developer has said New World of Steam contains more puzzles than previous entries in the series, while exploration and investigation have also been expanded through a more fully realized 3D world. Features revealed earlier in development include a world map, updated movement, interactive puzzle solving and puzzles that can contribute to the growth of Steam Bison.

The game also marks a significant platform expansion for the franchise. Professor Layton has historically been associated primarily with Nintendo handheld systems, but New World of Steam will launch on PlayStation 5 and PC alongside Switch and Switch 2. Level-5 has listed support for English, Japanese, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Korean, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese as part of the worldwide release.

The presentation is also receiving a notable musical collaboration. Composer Joe Hisaishi is contributing music for the main theme, while Lilas Ikuta, also known as ikura of YOASOBI, is handling lyrics and vocals. Yo Oizumi returns as the Japanese voice of Professor Layton, with Mio Imada voicing Luke.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam launches worldwide on December 10, 2026. With the date now locked in after a previous delay, the series is set to return more than three years after the project was first announced, bringing Layton and Luke back together for a new mystery built around Steam Bison’s rapidly evolving world.
