The Game Bakers is bringing Cairn to Nintendo Switch 2 in early 2027, expanding the acclaimed climbing game beyond its existing PlayStation 5 and PC versions. The new port was announced during Nintendo’s September 9 Direct, and a free Switch 2 demo is available through the Nintendo eShop today. A more specific release date has not yet been announced.
Cairn casts players as professional climber Aava as she attempts the first ascent of Mount Kami, a summit that has never previously been conquered. Rather than using fixed climbing routes, the game allows players to study the rock face and choose where to place Aava’s hands and feet, making balance, posture and route selection part of the challenge. Players also have to manage equipment and survival resources during the ascent, including pitons, chalk, food, water and medicine.
That climbing simulation is the game’s defining mechanic. Cairn uses direct control over Aava’s movement instead of relying on preset climbing animations, so difficult sections require players to identify usable holds and carefully distribute her weight. The Game Bakers describes each wall almost like a boss encounter, with mistakes potentially leading to falls and forcing players to reconsider how they approach a route.

The survival side adds another layer to the climb. Players can set up bivouacs, recover between difficult sections and search the mountain for resources as the expedition continues. Mount Kami is fully explorable rather than being presented as a single predetermined path, allowing different players to approach the same ascent through different routes depending on their confidence and available supplies.
Cairn originally launched for PlayStation 5 and PC on January 29, 2026 after several years of development. The Game Bakers, also known for Furi and Haven, developed and self-published the title, with its press materials describing Cairn as a survival-climbing simulation built around both the physical challenge of mountaineering and Aava’s personal story. The game has since maintained very positive user reception on Steam and received strong critical reviews across its initial platforms.
The Switch 2 release arrives roughly a year after the original launch rather than alongside it. Nintendo has not yet provided detailed technical specifications for the port, so resolution, frame rate and any Switch 2-specific control options remain unconfirmed. The free demo should nevertheless give players an early opportunity to see how the climbing controls and visual presentation translate to Nintendo’s hardware.
Nintendo’s official description says the Switch 2 version will preserve the central Mount Kami expedition, including the ability to climb anywhere, plan routes and manage resources throughout the ascent. Players will also encounter characters along the journey and uncover more of the mountain’s history as Aava pushes toward the summit. The narrative is built around what she is willing to sacrifice in pursuit of completing a climb no one else has managed.
The announcement adds another established third-party title to Switch 2’s growing 2027 lineup. Nintendo has recently confirmed several games for the system beyond its first-party catalog, including Persona 6 for Nintendo Switch 2 and Bloober Team’s Onyx: The Dark Grip, which is also scheduled for 2027. Cairn stands apart from those larger releases with a much more focused simulation built around one climber and one mountain.
The Game Bakers has not announced pricing for the Switch 2 version or confirmed whether owners on other platforms will receive any cross-platform progression features. There is also no firm date beyond the early 2027 window. For now, Nintendo Switch 2 owners can try Cairn through the free eShop demo ahead of the full release next year.
Cairn is currently available on PlayStation 5 and PC, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version launching in early 2027. The new port brings The Game Bakers’ physics-driven climbing and survival systems to Nintendo’s current console while giving players a free preview months ahead of release.
