Nintendo has revealed more of what players can do outside the main sports in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, detailing free-roam exploration, collectibles, sightseeing activities and a new offline Island Crown mode. The Switch 2 exclusive launches October 22, 2026, with the latest Nintendo Direct showing how Wuhu Island functions as more than a collection of individual sports venues. The update adds significant context to the 12 motion-controlled sports Nintendo announced earlier this year.

Players will be able to freely explore Wuhu Island between activities rather than moving only through menus. Nintendo says players can chase dolphins in the ocean, search the island for hidden hibiscus flowers and collect Spocco Photos tied to sightseeing spots around the resort. Those additions make the island itself part of the progression loop and bring back more of the exploratory feel associated with Wuhu Island’s earlier appearances.

Island Crown is another major addition revealed in the September Direct. The mode is designed for offline play and lets players climb through the ranks in each sport before challenging Island Champions and, eventually, Island Legends. That gives solo players a more structured progression system beyond simply repeating individual matches or chasing personal scores.

Progress across the game also feeds into a new reward currency called Spocco Points. Playing any sport in any mode earns points, which can then be exchanged for customization items for Sportsmate and Mii characters. Nintendo has not yet detailed the full reward catalog, but the system gives both solo and multiplayer sessions a shared progression layer across the wider resort.

The core sports lineup remains unchanged at 12 activities. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort includes Boxing, Table Tennis, Archery, Tennis, Volleyball, Bowling, Basketball, Golf and Thumb Wrestling, alongside the more exploration-focused Skateboarding, Power Cruising and Prop Plane. Jump Rope is also available separately as a warm-up activity before players head into the main sports.

Several activities make use of the Joy-Con 2 in different ways. Skateboarding uses the controller’s mouse functionality, while Power Cruising has players handle the Joy-Con 2 like handlebars and Prop Plane uses controller tilting for flight. Traditional sports continue to rely on motion controls, with the controllers acting as rackets, bows, clubs and other equipment depending on the event.

Wuhu Island itself is a familiar location for Nintendo sports games, having previously appeared in Wii Sports Resort and other Nintendo titles. The new game revisits the island with a broader structure designed around exploration as well as competition, rather than treating it purely as background scenery. That distinction is now clearer after the September reveal, which focused heavily on what players can do while moving around the resort between sporting events.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is also being positioned as one of the larger first-party releases for Switch 2 this October. The game arrives one week before Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 hardware launches on October 29, giving Nintendo two major releases aimed at different parts of the Switch 2 audience within the same month.

Nintendo has confirmed support for Sportsmate and Mii customization, online play and local multiplayer, with up to four players supported on a single system. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online features, while additional controllers may be necessary for multiplayer depending on the mode. The game has an estimated file size of 16GB.

The September Direct therefore expands Nintendo Switch Sports Resort beyond its original pitch of 12 motion-controlled sports. Free exploration, collectibles, Spocco Points and the Island Crown progression system give players more reasons to spend time across Wuhu Island rather than jumping directly from one event to another.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026. Pre-orders are already open through Nintendo’s digital storefront, with the latest reveal establishing Wuhu Island itself as a central part of the experience alongside the sports.
