Bungie has delayed Marathon’s next major content update from September 22 to December 8, rolling the planned additions into a larger update called Symbiosis. The studio says the extra time is intended to give the team more room to build, test and improve the new content before release. A smaller Nightfall Refresh will now arrive on October 6 to reset progression and address the live game while players wait for the larger December release.
The September update had previously been positioned as the beginning of Marathon’s next season, with Bungie promising a major overhaul of the Perimeter zone, a new Runner shell, new weapons and equipment, and broader changes to the early-game experience. Bungie is now moving away from that strict seasonal structure entirely. Rather than tying major releases to fixed season dates, the developer says future content will arrive when individual updates are ready.
Symbiosis is now positioned as the first major step in that revised approach. The December 8 update will introduce Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, providing an alternative to the extraction shooter’s normal PvPvE structure. Bungie says the mode will offer another way to explore, progress and engage with Marathon’s world, building on lessons gathered from the temporary Vault Breaker PvE experiment introduced during Season 2.

The refreshed Perimeter experience is also moving to December. Perimeter is Marathon’s introductory zone and was already scheduled to receive new locations, encounters and gameplay changes intended to improve the early hours of the game. Bungie previously identified onboarding as one of Marathon’s major problem areas, particularly for players learning its inventory systems, progression, maps and extraction mechanics for the first time.
Symbiosis will also add a new Runner shell and a social space containing a firing range. The social area represents a new type of space for Marathon, allowing players to spend time outside its normal extraction maps and test equipment before entering matches. Bungie has additionally confirmed an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, extending its experiments beyond the extraction structure that formed the game’s core at launch.
New-player improvements will arrive alongside those features. Bungie says the December update will include the first part of a broader effort to make Marathon easier to understand, with additional work planned beyond Symbiosis. The developer has repeatedly acknowledged since launch that new players can quickly become overwhelmed by the game’s progression, loot, interface and survival systems.
Before Symbiosis, the October 6 Nightfall Refresh will effectively provide players with a fresh starting point. Bungie plans to reset player progression and the in-game economy, introduce a new Rewards Pass, make quality-of-life improvements and apply balance and live-game tuning. Vault Breaker will also return temporarily, allowing Bungie to gather more information about how PvE activity fits into the wider progression system following the reset.
The October update follows problems Bungie identified with Season 2’s economy and progression. The studio says some players reached the endgame too quickly while others were left behind, undermining the intended effect of the seasonal reset. Bungie plans to use the October refresh to apply what it learned from Nightfall and establish a more sustainable progression curve ahead of the larger December release.
The change is significant because Bungie originally described Marathon seasons as roughly three-month periods carrying new gameplay, Runner shells, zones, gear and other additions. Season 2 began in June, and the September 22 date had been publicly established as the point when the next phase would start. Moving away from that model gives Bungie greater development flexibility, but it also creates a considerably longer gap before players receive the substantial Perimeter and PvE content originally expected this month.
Bungie says it will continue running gameplay experiments during the eight weeks between the October refresh and Symbiosis, with feedback from those tests influencing development. The studio is also looking further ahead to another stage of Marathon’s evolution in March, although the full contents of that update have not yet been detailed. Symbiosis is being described as the beginning of that broader shift rather than a standalone seasonal drop.
Marathon launched on March 5, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with cross-play and cross-save. Its next update is now the Nightfall Refresh on October 6, followed by Symbiosis on December 8. The larger December release will carry much of the content once planned for September while expanding the update with permanent PvE, Team Deathmatch, a social space and additional onboarding improvements.
