Bayonetta is joining Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds as the first free character update planned for the game’s second year of post-launch support. SEGA revealed the crossover on September 15, confirming that the Umbra Witch will become a playable racer alongside her own Butterfly Witch machine. The free update will also include special Bayonetta-themed emotes and sounds, although a release date has not yet been announced.

The announcement extends SEGA’s ongoing approach of mixing Sonic characters with racers pulled from its wider catalog and outside franchises. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has already added characters such as Arle from Puyo Puyo, Axel from Crazy Taxi and Amigo from Samba de Amigo through free updates. Bayonetta will continue that strategy into year two rather than being locked behind the game’s paid crossover pass.

SEGA has not yet detailed Bayonetta’s racing statistics, machine attributes or whether her update will include a dedicated festival event. Recent free character drops have typically bundled a racer with a signature vehicle, additional presentation elements and sometimes music or limited-time events. For now, the confirmed Bayonetta content consists of the playable character, Butterfly Witch machine, special emotes and sounds.

Bayonetta’s arrival also gives Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds another major SEGA-associated character outside the core Sonic cast. The character debuted in PlatinumGames’ 2009 action game Bayonetta, published by SEGA on its original platforms, before later entries in the series became closely associated with Nintendo. Her appearance in CrossWorlds brings that history back into a SEGA racing game built around crossing franchises and dimensions.

The free character update is separate from Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ paid Season Pass 2. SEGA announced that pass earlier in 2026 with six additional crossover packs, beginning with Godzilla and Evangelion and leaving four more collaborations to be revealed. Bayonetta, by contrast, is being positioned as a free year-two racer rather than one of those paid packs.

That distinction follows the structure SEGA used throughout the game’s first year. Characters such as Classic Sonic, Axel and Amigo were distributed at no additional cost, while larger licensed packs included more substantial combinations of racers, vehicles and themed courses. The company has therefore maintained two parallel post-launch tracks: free character additions and paid crossover expansions.

CrossWorlds itself launched across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The racing game uses Travel Rings to move players between different environments during a race and includes a large roster drawn from Sonic and other franchises. SEGA has continued expanding that lineup well beyond launch, with year-two support showing that the crossover strategy is not slowing down.

The timing of Bayonetta’s reveal also comes as SEGA prepares to move CrossWorlds beyond its initial post-launch cycle. A Year One Edition of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has already appeared through a retailer listing, suggesting SEGA is beginning to package the game’s first wave of content while introducing another round of additions for existing players.

SEGA has not announced whether Bayonetta will arrive before or after the first Season Pass 2 crossover content. Godzilla and Evangelion are already confirmed as part of that paid roadmap, but exact dates for those packs have not been fully laid out. That leaves Bayonetta’s position in the year-two schedule open for now.

What is clear is that Bayonetta will be available as a free addition rather than a premium character. Her update will include the Butterfly Witch machine alongside themed emotes and audio elements, giving her a complete character package in line with earlier free racers. SEGA says she will be the first free character update of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ second year, with more post-launch content expected to follow.
