DrinkBox Studios has delayed Blighted from its previously planned fall 2026 release window to 2027. The studio confirmed the schedule change in a new development update, saying the team needs additional time to polish and tune the game before launch. Blighted is currently in development for PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch 2.

According to DrinkBox, development has continued to progress and the team itself has grown, but the studio no longer believes a 2026 release would provide enough time to finish the game to the standard it wants. The developer has not announced a more specific 2027 launch window. More information is expected in the new year, while DrinkBox also teased one additional development update before the end of 2026.

The delay follows DrinkBox’s March announcement that it was targeting a fall 2026 release. At the time, the studio said development had reached a major internal milestone and the team was preparing to play through the latest version of the game from beginning to end. That update also confirmed that Blighted would launch on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside the previously announced Steam version.

Blighted is a Metroidvania action RPG set in what DrinkBox describes as a psychedelic Western nightmare. It is the studio’s first fully 3D game and is being developed using an updated version of DrinkBox’s proprietary technology. The project comes from the team behind Guacamelee! and Nobody Saves the World and represents a significant change in visual presentation compared with the studio’s earlier releases.

Combat is one of the game’s main focuses, mixing fast action with more deliberate mechanics that punish poorly timed attacks and defensive mistakes. DrinkBox has described the system as sitting somewhere between arcade-style action and Souls-inspired combat, with dodges, parries, ranged attacks, counters and finishers all contributing to encounters. Fighting groups of enemies is encouraged, but stronger attacks require commitment and careful management of resources such as stamina.

A central mechanic called Blight dynamically reacts to how effectively the player performs. As Blight increases, enemy behavior, player abilities and even parts of the surrounding environment can change, creating additional difficulty as players demonstrate greater proficiency. DrinkBox has said the system is intended to keep combat challenging rather than allowing skilled players to simply overpower encounters using the same tactics throughout the game.

Progression also revolves around recovering lost memories by consuming the brains of defeated bosses. Doing so unlocks ethereal abilities that can be used both during combat and while exploring the world, including powers needed to reach hidden routes or complete special challenges. The game supports solo play as well as two-player drop-in, drop-out cooperative multiplayer.

DrinkBox’s latest development update also offered another look at the game’s world structure, including Watcher’s Peak, a hub area players will return to during the adventure. Earlier development posts have introduced several non-player characters found there and elsewhere in the world, while environmental storytelling is being used alongside traditional interactions to communicate much of the game’s narrative.

The studio has continued expanding Blighted throughout development with additional enemies, areas, gameplay systems and narrative content. DrinkBox previously revealed that it had assembled an early version of the entire game before restructuring and rebuilding sections as development progressed. More recent internal milestones have involved full-team playtests designed to identify areas requiring further work.

Blighted will now launch sometime in 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam. DrinkBox has not provided a new release date, but another development update is planned before the end of 2026, with additional news expected next year.
