Epic Games has made two immediate gameplay adjustments to Fortnite’s Competitive playlists, disabling Phase Dash and reducing the distance at which the Bonerattler SMG can reveal opponents. Fortnite Status announced the changes on October 1, confirming that both adjustments apply specifically to Competitive play rather than the broader Battle Royale experience.
The changes arrive alongside Fortnite’s Fortnitemares 2026 update, which introduced a large Halloween-themed content refresh across Battle Royale, Ranked Battle Royale and Reload. Epic’s official event announcement confirms the return of the Bonerattler SMG as part of the seasonal loot pool, describing it as a weapon capable of revealing enemies. The same update also introduces new mobility and combat-related items, making competitive balance adjustments particularly relevant as players begin adapting to the refreshed loot pool.
Phase Dash is the first ability affected by the Competitive changes. Epic has disabled it outright in Competitive play, meaning players participating in those modes can no longer use the movement ability as part of their loadouts or combat strategies. The adjustment is separate from the wider Fortnitemares content rollout and indicates that Epic is treating the ability differently in competitive environments than in the standard game.
The Bonerattler SMG has instead received a targeted adjustment to its detection capability. Epic says the distance at which the weapon reveals opponents has been reduced, limiting how far away enemies can be detected through its tracking effect. Because information about an opponent’s position can influence rotations, engagements and defensive decisions, the change directly affects how the weapon can be used in competitive matches.
The timing is also notable because Fortnite’s competitive schedule continues through the new seasonal content rollout. Epic’s competitive calendar lists Fortnite Performance Evaluation events on October 1 and October 2, followed by additional Victory Cup and FNCS events later in the week. Fortnite’s reported 2027 competitive roadmap provides additional context for the broader competitive schedule and format changes surrounding the game.
The adjustments also come as Epic continues to refine Fortnite’s competitive rules around newly introduced seasonal mechanics. Earlier datamining around the current season identified Phase Dash among the abilities associated with upcoming Sprites, while the live Fortnitemares update has now brought related mechanics into the game. That makes the Competitive restriction a concrete change to how some of the season’s new systems can be used in tournament-oriented play.
For players outside Competitive modes, Epic’s announcement does not indicate that Phase Dash has been universally removed or that the Bonerattler’s detection range has been reduced across every playlist. The changes announced by Fortnite Status are explicitly framed around Competitive play, leaving the broader Fortnitemares experience unchanged by these particular balance adjustments.
