Owlcat Games has announced that Shadow of the Road, the upcoming story-driven tactical RPG developed by Another Angle Games, has been delayed from November 12, 2026, to March 10, 2027. The publisher confirmed the revised release date on October 9, explaining that the development team needs additional time to address remaining issues, improve combat balance, and refine character progression. The game remains scheduled for PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.
The postponement moves Shadow of the Road nearly four months beyond its previously announced release date. In its official statement, Owlcat Games explained that development had reached a point where the team recognized the need for more time before launch. Rather than release the game in November with outstanding issues, the studio will use the additional development period to improve the overall experience.
A significant part of the remaining work concerns the game’s tactical combat system. Shadow of the Road uses turn-based encounters built around positioning, initiative, and the abilities available to individual party members. Owlcat Games wants those elements to have meaningful consequences during battles, ensuring that players are rewarded for planning their actions and adapting to different combat situations.

The developers are also reviewing encounter balance so that battles offer appropriate challenges without reducing the importance of tactical decision-making. Positioning characters correctly, choosing when to use particular abilities, and understanding the order in which combatants act are intended to remain central to the experience. The additional development time will allow Another Angle Games to adjust how these systems interact across different encounters.
Character progression is another area receiving attention. The team wants players to have more reasons to experiment with different abilities and party configurations instead of relying on a small selection of consistently effective strategies. Improving progression should also make character development more engaging as players advance through the story and face increasingly demanding enemies.
Shadow of the Road takes place in an alternative version of Japan during 1868, combining historical conflict with supernatural elements and steampunk technology. The setting draws inspiration from the political and military upheaval surrounding the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, but introduces fictional forces that significantly change the course of events. Traditional samurai, supernatural creatures, and technologically advanced military equipment exist alongside one another in this reimagined world.
The story follows events during a civil war between forces supporting Shogun Tokugawa and those aligned with Emperor Mutsuhito. In the game’s fictional setting, the emperor’s technologically superior army receives support from the British East Nippon Company, creating an additional source of political and military conflict. Players assemble a party of characters with different backgrounds and motivations while navigating a story shaped by their decisions.
Combat encounters feature both human opponents and supernatural enemies, including yōkai and mechanical creatures. The game combines traditional tactical RPG mechanics with party-based character development, allowing players to approach encounters using different combinations of abilities. Its emphasis on narrative choices is intended to give players influence over relationships, story developments, and the eventual outcome of their journey.
The delay comes after Owlcat Games previously announced the November 12 release date in August. The publisher, known for its involvement with role-playing games including Pathfinder and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, is working with Another Angle Games to bring the project to PC. The latest announcement does not indicate any changes to the game’s supported storefronts or previously described gameplay features.
Shadow of the Road is among several RPGs that have shifted their release schedules into 2027 as developers allocate additional time to finishing their projects. Other recently announced postponements include Blighted's move into 2027 for further polish and UN:Me's delay to improve character animation and presentation. These are separate development decisions, although they similarly reflect studios choosing longer production schedules rather than maintaining earlier launch windows.
Owlcat Games has confirmed that additional trailers and information about the game’s world will be released during the extended development period. However, it has not provided a detailed schedule for those updates or announced any new gameplay demonstrations.
Shadow of the Road is now scheduled to launch on March 10, 2027, for PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. The revised date gives Another Angle Games more time to address remaining technical issues and refine the tactical systems that form the foundation of its turn-based RPG.
