Seagate has refreshed its Expansion external hard drive lineup with redesigned enclosures, USB-C connectivity and storage capacities reaching 30TB. The updated range includes six Expansion Desktop models and two smaller Expansion Portable drives, offering additional storage options for PC users managing large media collections, backups and game libraries.
The company officially announced the refreshed Expansion Desktop and Portable products on September 30, 2026, alongside an updated One Touch Portable drive. The new models retain their existing product names but introduce substantial changes to their physical designs and bundled cables.
The Expansion Desktop lineup now includes 4TB, 8TB, 16TB, 20TB, 24TB and 30TB configurations. These use internal 3.5-inch hard drives and require an external power adapter. The previous generation offered a wider selection of capacities, with models ranging from 4TB to 28TB.

The most noticeable design change is the enclosure. Previous Expansion Desktop drives used a black, vertically oriented housing, while the refreshed models feature a gray enclosure designed to sit horizontally on a desk. The new desktop enclosure measures 190 × 43 × 133mm.
Connectivity has also changed, although the drives do not feature a native USB-C port. Instead, Seagate supplies an 80cm USB Micro-B to USB-C cable, replacing the shorter Micro-B to USB-A cable bundled with the previous models. The connector on the drive itself remains USB Micro-B, allowing users to connect the updated products directly to modern PCs equipped with USB-C ports.
According to ComputerBase's October 10 report, the smaller Expansion Desktop configurations are already available through European retailers. Reported prices start at approximately €163 for 4TB, rising to €259 for 8TB, €500 for 16TB, €674 for 20TB and €760 for 24TB. The 30TB model has been announced but is not yet available through the retailers tracked in the report.
The Expansion Portable series has received a similar redesign, with two capacities available: 2TB and 4TB. Both models contain 2.5-inch mechanical hard drives, use USB power rather than an external adapter and include a 50cm USB Micro-B to USB-C cable.
The 2TB Portable model measures 117 × 82 × 13mm and weighs approximately 150g. The larger 4TB version measures 118 × 85 × 21mm and weighs 246g, reflecting the thicker internal hard drive required for the additional capacity.
The revised portable lineup is also narrower than its predecessor, which included 1TB and 5TB options. ComputerBase lists European retail prices of approximately €134 for the 2TB model and €185 for the 4TB version, with both capacities already available.
For PC gamers, the larger capacities provide another option for storing downloaded games, installers, recordings and backups without occupying valuable internal SSD space. Managing storage for a large PC game library increasingly involves balancing capacity against the performance requirements of modern games.
These Expansion products remain mechanical hard drives rather than SSDs, making them better suited to bulk storage and archival purposes than workloads requiring consistently fast loading and data access. Games designed around high-speed SSD storage may not perform as intended when installed directly on an external HDD.
The updated USB-C cables improve compatibility with modern computers, but the connector change should not be mistaken for an increase in mechanical drive performance. Seagate has not presented the refresh as a significant transfer-speed upgrade.
The new Expansion products also arrive as hard-drive manufacturers face growing demand for high-capacity storage. Competition for storage technology and manufacturing resources has attracted attention across the industry, including reported interest from Seagate and Toshiba in TDK's HDD magnetic-head business.
Seagate’s official product information confirms capacities reaching 30TB for the Expansion Desktop range. However, the company has not established a specific retail availability date for the highest-capacity model in the information currently available. Regional prices and stock levels may differ from the European listings.
