DarkStone Digital, the developer behind The Mortuary Assistant, has released Playable Archive, a free psychological horror game available now on PC through Steam. Published by DreadXP, the standalone experience launched on October 26, 2026, offering approximately 30 to 60 minutes of gameplay built from material originally developed for a canceled horror project.
The surprise release arrives just ahead of Halloween and gives players an opportunity to experience part of a larger game that will never receive a full release. DarkStone Digital founder Brian Clarke reworked and polished elements of the abandoned project into a self-contained experience rather than leaving the unfinished work unreleased.
Playable Archive follows the discovery of an unusual collection of footage connected to a New England couple renovating their home. During the renovations, the couple encounters a mysterious object associated with unexplained supernatural events. The material eventually surfaces through an anonymous whistleblower, whose report warns about the potential consequences of examining the archive.

Players investigate the disturbing footage and uncover information about the events surrounding the property. The game’s Steam description highlights demonic rituals, communication with the dead and experiences involving multiple timelines, suggesting a psychological horror experience built around supernatural mysteries.
The developer also emphasizes that Playable Archive is intended to be completed in a single session. The game has no save system, meaning players must finish its approximately 30-to-60-minute experience in one sitting. Its short runtime makes it a considerably smaller release than The Mortuary Assistant, which originally launched in August 2022.
The project also has an unusual development history. Playable Archive preserves material from Clarke’s canceled Paranormal Activity horror game, allowing some of its gameplay concepts and environments to reach players despite the larger project’s cancellation.
In a message published alongside the Steam release, Clarke explained that he had spent years developing his next major title before the project was canceled. Despite receiving encouraging feedback during a public showing at PAX earlier in 2026, he had become burned out and expected the unfinished game to remain permanently shelved.
DreadXP subsequently approached Clarke about releasing the existing material. He decided to revise what could be salvaged and prepare it as a smaller experience, although substantial portions of the original project could not be included.
Clarke described the release as a form of personal healing after investing significant time in the canceled game. He explained that preserving some of the project’s work felt more meaningful than allowing it to disappear entirely.
The developer also confirmed that he is moving forward with plans for new projects. However, Playable Archive should not be interpreted as a revival of the canceled full-scale game, which remains discontinued.
Playable Archive is available free on Steam for Windows PCs. Its release gives horror fans a new short-form experience from the creator of The Mortuary Assistant without requiring a purchase, while preserving a small portion of an otherwise abandoned project.
