Nintendo Adds Accessibility Tags to Switch and Switch 2 Store

Nintendo has introduced accessibility tags to its digital game storefront, allowing Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 players to discover games based on supported accessibility features. The new classifications cover input controls, visual settings, audio options and gameplay features, helping players identify suitable titles before purchasing them.

The accessibility tags are part of the Accessible Games Initiative, an industry-wide project supported by the Entertainment Software Association. Nintendo confirmed its membership in March 2025, when it announced plans to adopt standardized accessibility labels. The company’s Nintendo Store now provides a dedicated game-tag browsing page, with the availability of the new classifications highlighted on November 4, 2026.

The system allows players to select an accessibility tag and browse games that support the corresponding feature. Instead of examining individual game descriptions to determine whether a title meets specific requirements, users can discover compatible games through standardized categories.

The Accessible Games Initiative includes 23 tags covering different aspects of accessibility. Input-related classifications include Full Input Remapping, Basic Input Remapping, Playable with Buttons Only, Playable without Motion Controls and Playable without Rapid Button Presses.

Full Input Remapping identifies games that allow players to reassign game actions to supported controls, while Playable with Buttons Only indicates that a game can be played without requiring pressure-sensitive input. Other classifications identify games that do not require touchscreen interactions or repeated button presses.

Visual accessibility tags include Camera Comfort, Clear Text, Large Text, Color Alternatives and Large & Clear Subtitles. Camera Comfort identifies games that avoid potentially uncomfortable camera effects or provide settings to disable or adjust them. Audio-related categories include Narrated Menus, Mono Sound, Stereo Sound, Surround Sound and Multiple Volume Controls.

Gameplay accessibility is also represented through Difficulty Levels and Save Anytime. The latter indicates that players can manually save their progress during gameplay, subject to limited exceptions such as situations where saving could prevent further progress.

The tags describe supported features rather than automatically enabling them. Players may still need to adjust individual game settings to use certain accessibility options.

Nintendo’s involvement is not a new partnership announced this week. The company originally joined the Accessible Games Initiative in March 2025, making the availability of the standardized store classifications the latest development.

Other participating companies include Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Riot Games, Amazon Games and Google. The initiative establishes shared definitions for accessibility features, allowing participating storefronts and publishers to describe supported functionality consistently.

Nintendo previously explained that publishers would be able to opt into the tagging system for their games. Consequently, the availability of individual tags depends on the information provided for participating titles, rather than every Switch or Switch 2 game automatically receiving a complete accessibility classification.

The new browsing system provides an additional way to evaluate games across Nintendo’s expanding digital catalogue, including newer Switch 2 releases such as The Outlast Trials. However, the presence of a game on Nintendo’s storefront does not necessarily mean that it already carries accessibility tags.

Players can explore the classifications through the Nintendo Store’s dedicated game-tags page, while the Accessible Games Initiative provides detailed descriptions and requirements explaining what each accessibility label represents.
