In an industry known for its fast pace and high demands, video game workers are increasingly standing up for fair treatment and recognition. As conversations around labor rights, unionization, and workplace protections gain momentum, major shifts are beginning to take shape.

While some studios face turmoil and cancelled projects, like EA’s recent cuts and game cancellations, the push for fair treatment and job security is driving change across the industry. These shifts also highlight the need for organizing to protect rights and future in gaming.

Amid these industry-wide changes, a significant breakthrough has emerged. More than 300 QA union workers at ZeniMax media, known for major titles such as The Elder Scrolls and DOOM, have announced reaching a tentative deal with their parent company Microsoft.

Importance: This milestone comes nearly two years after they formed their union and established a groundbreaking precedent for labor rights within the gaming industry. Additionally, this landmark deal paves the way for stronger and greater industry-wide change in game development.

The historic deal ensures better pay and job security for those who bring The Elder Scrolls to life.

Major Labor Rights Secured In Microsoft QA Union Deal

ZeniMax Workers United, unionized under the Communications Workers of America (CWA), announced the agreement includes significant wage increases, minimum salaries, protection from arbitrary dismissal, grievance procedures, AI usage safeguards, and guaranteed crediting for QA workers.

ZeniMax Media’s Role in the Microsoft QA Union Deal

ZeniMax Media‘s vast influence in the industry makes this landmark agreement even greater, as the parent company of top studios like Bethesda, id Software, Arkane, and more. ZeniMax is behind major franchises like The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, and Fallout.

Jessee Leese on the Impact of the Microsoft QA Union Deal

It was acquired by Microsoft in $8.1 billion in 2021 and now operates under Microsoft Gaming division. Jessee Leese, a member of the bargaining committee, emphasized that despite gaming’s massive profits, workers are often exploited.

He highlighted that unionizing and scoring this first contract empowers developers to reclaim their rights and encourages others in the industry to demand fair treatment and set new standards.

ZeniMax unionized in January 2023 after Microsoft’s labor neutrality pledge, but faced a difficult path marked by strikes over remote work, low pay, and outsourcing concerns. After nearly two years, a tentative agreement has been reached and now awaits ratification by June 20.
