Monetization in gaming is on the rise—and not always popular. Call of Duty, a major franchise, has faced backlash for its aggressive in-game ads. Call of Duty players weren’t happy when S4 Black Ops 6 and Warzone rolled out with a surprising new addition—ads embedded directly into the loadout screens.

What seemed like a minor UI weal quickly turned into a major talking point, with players comparing the experience to booting up a mobile game. As frustration grew, some began to wonder just how far Activision would go in its monetization push.

As a result of backlash, Call of Duty had reversed loadout ads. Activision has removed the bundle ads that appeared in the loadout menus of Black Ops 6 and Warzone, confirming they were added “in error” as part of a UI test in the Season 4 update.

Importance: The brief introduction of ads sparked backlash, revealing the growing tension between monetization and player experience. Fans expect premium games to be ad-free, and aggressive advertisement risks damaging trust. Developers need to balance revenue with player satisfaction.

Introduction Of Bunde Ads In Loadout Screens

In Season 4 of Black Ops 6, bundle ads introduced within loadout screens which players found virtually distracting. Users were confronted with ads promoting weapon blueprints, instead of customizing their loadouts, leading to frustration among the community.

Speculation On Developer Intentions Behind UI Changes

Many argued that it was unfair to be shown ads for a content in a game they had already purchased. Season 4 also faced criticism for hiding of player levels in multiplayer lobbies. Players speculated this was done to prevent casual gamers from feeling intimidated.

Reassurance After Call Of Duty Reversed Loadout Ads

Activision has clarified that both the loadout ads and hidden player levels in Call of Duty were unintentional errors, which have been reversed, and assured the community that these features were not meant to be permanent.

While some players remain skeptical of Activision’s explanation, the ads have been removed from multiplayer and Warzone loadouts for now. Since it was only a test, it’s still unclear whether these advertisements might return in the future.
