A long-running unannounced Metro multiplayer project has reportedly been pulled from Saber Latam amid layoffs and wider restructuring at the studio. MP1st reports that the project had been in development for nearly six years, while local reporting says Saber Latam recently laid off 25 employees and closed its offices in Uruguay and Peru. The project’s future is now unclear, although there is currently no official confirmation that it has been cancelled outright.

Saber Latam CEO Lucas Wall confirmed to Argentine outlet Press Over that the studio had lost a major project as part of the restructuring. Wall did not publicly identify that project as Metro, meaning the connection remains based on prior reporting and information surrounding the studio’s known work rather than a direct confirmation from Saber. He did, however, state that only six members of the affected project team would remain associated with it.

The reported Metro project had involved roughly 60 developers at Saber Latam before the restructuring. That means the reduction to six people represents a substantial change to the studio’s involvement even if development continues elsewhere within Saber Interactive. MP1st describes the project as having been pulled from Saber Latam, which leaves open the possibility that work has been transferred rather than completely abandoned.

The roots of the multiplayer project stretch back to 2020. Metro developer 4A Games said at the time that its partnership with Saber Interactive would allow it to explore a multiplayer experience set within the Metro universe. The studio stressed that multiplayer would have a dedicated development team and would not replace its commitment to story-driven single-player Metro games.

4A Games was also careful not to define exactly what form the multiplayer project would take. The studio said it was exploring concepts rather than simply attaching multiplayer to its next single-player release, and it explicitly noted that the two experiences did not necessarily need to be part of the same game. That distinction remains important because the reported Saber Latam project was never formally unveiled to the public with a title, platforms or release window.

Saber Latam’s involvement became clearer in 2024 when Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch said the Argentine studio, then known for its history as Nimble Giant Entertainment, was working on a Metro title. Combined with 4A Games’ earlier confirmation that Saber would support a dedicated multiplayer effort, that disclosure helped establish the reported connection between the studio and the long-running online project.

The latest restructuring affects more than the Metro work. Saber Latam has reportedly dismissed 25 developers and shut its operations in Uruguay and Peru, while former CEO Andrés Chilkowski has left the company after nearly 25 years connected to the studio. Wall, previously the company’s COO, has taken over as CEO and said that affected employees received legally required severance.

The circumstances resemble a broader pattern of projects being reduced, reassigned or halted during industry restructuring. Other multiplayer-focused projects have faced similar uncertainty, while some games have continued despite significant staff reductions. That makes the situation different from a formally announced cancellation such as a project being publicly shelved, and the Metro title should still be treated as active-but-uncertain unless Saber, 4A Games or publisher Deep Silver confirms otherwise.

The reported changes also do not affect the separate single-player future of the Metro franchise. 4A Games has repeatedly stated that it remains committed to story-driven Metro experiences, and its multiplayer exploration was always described as an additional project rather than a replacement for the series’ core direction. That separation means any setback to the online project should not automatically be interpreted as affecting the next mainline Metro game.

For now, the strongest confirmed point is that Saber Latam has lost a major project and undergone significant staff reductions, while multiple reports identify that project as the long-running Metro multiplayer game. Only six members of the previous team are said to remain connected to it. Whether development continues elsewhere within Saber Interactive or the project has effectively been wound down has not yet been officially clarified.
