    Night City’s skyline is glowing once again—Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is officially back. At Anime Expo 2025, fans were treated to wave of exciting announcements, including a fresh logo, new artwork, and a creative shift that has the community buzzing.

    With CD PROJEKT RED reuniting with the legendary studio TRIGGER, all eyes are now on the bold direction this chapter will take. One key change behind the scenes has especially caught attention, and it just might surprise longtime fans of the original series.

    The upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 has officially named its new director—Kai Ikarashi—who will be taking over the reins from Hiroyuki Imaishi. This change marks a significant creative shift as the anime continues its partnership with Studio TRIGGER and prepares for its Netflix release.

    Importance: Kai Ikarashi’s role as director signals a fresh creative vision that may push Cyberpunk anime into new thematic and stylish territory. It highlights a trend of promoting emerging talent to innovate within established franchises, potentially setting new standards for anime sequels worldwide.

    Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Director Passing The Creative Baton

    During Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, CD RPOJEKT RED announced their continued collaboration with Studio TRIGGER for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. In a special panel, it was confirmed that Kai Ikarashi, known for directing the highly praised Episode 6 of the first season.

    His work on titles like Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01, Bocchi the Rock! and Mob Psycho 100, will make his directional debut leading the sequel. Hiroyuki Imaishi, the original director of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, officially passed the torch to Ikarashi during the event, starting a new creative vision for the series.

    Maintaining High Standards In Storytelling And Design

    Alongside Ikarashi, the production will feature key talents such as lead character designer Kanno Ichigo and screenplay adapter Masahiko Otsuka, ensuring the continuation of the anime’s high-quality storytelling and design.

    Cyberpunk 2077, the open-world RPG from CD PROJEKT RED, remains a landmark title known for its rich storytelling and immersive Night City setting, which continues to inspire expansions into anime and other media.
