XDefiant Fan Project Aims to Restore the Game With Private Servers

A fan-led preservation project is attempting to make Ubisoft’s discontinued shooter XDefiant playable again through private servers. The effort, known as Project Rogue, was publicly revealed by its developers after months of work reverse engineering the game’s networking. The team says it has replicated multiple network protocols used by XDefiant, although actual gameplay is not yet functional and there is currently no estimated release date.

Project Rogue is not affiliated with Ubisoft and should not be confused with an official revival of XDefiant. According to the team, the project is intended to recreate the server-side infrastructure needed for the original client to function after Ubisoft permanently shut down the game’s official servers in June 2025. The developers describe it as a fan preservation effort and say substantial development work still needs to be completed before players will be able to connect.

The project has already progressed beyond a purely theoretical proposal. Its developers say they have successfully reverse engineered and replicated multiple networking protocols used by XDefiant, which represents one of the basic technical requirements for replacing the unavailable Ubisoft services. A first public demonstration shared by the team shows progress on the replacement infrastructure, but the developers have explicitly warned that gameplay is not currently possible.

Project Rogue is expected to be distributed through Ancify, an existing launcher designed for community-made server emulators. Ancify provides projects with features including authentication, game launching, matchmaking and optional server deployment infrastructure, allowing emulator developers to focus on recreating individual games rather than building every supporting service from scratch. The XDefiant team has said its project will appear through Ancify once it is ready for players.

The developers are also taking steps intended to keep the project separate from Ubisoft’s copyrighted game files. They say Project Rogue itself will not distribute copyrighted XDefiant material and that users will be expected to have previously owned the game in order to use the revival project. That distinction is important because the original XDefiant client is no longer normally available to new players after Ubisoft stopped new downloads and registrations when it announced the shutdown.

Several planned quality-of-life features have also been discussed by the team, although they remain future goals rather than finished functionality. The developers have indicated that a server browser is planned and that progression restrictions could potentially be removed, allowing content to be made available without relying on Ubisoft’s original account infrastructure. Specific implementation details have not yet been finalized publicly, and those plans could change as development continues.

XDefiant launched in May 2024 as Ubisoft’s free-to-play competitive first-person shooter, combining traditional arena-style multiplayer with factions and abilities inspired by several Ubisoft franchises. Despite a strong initial launch, Ubisoft announced in December 2024 that development would end after the game failed to retain enough players to justify continued investment in the highly competitive free-to-play shooter market. New downloads, registrations and purchases were stopped immediately, while existing players were allowed to continue until the servers closed on June 3, 2025.

Because XDefiant was designed as an online-only game, the shutdown effectively made the original release unplayable once Ubisoft’s backend services disappeared. Ubisoft did not provide an official offline mode or community server package before the closure, leaving fan-made server emulation as one of the few possible ways the original client could become functional again. That makes Project Rogue notable as a preservation effort even though it remains at an early stage.

There are still significant technical and legal uncertainties surrounding the project. Reverse engineering an online game’s networking infrastructure can require recreating authentication, matchmaking, session handling and other proprietary server behavior, while a fan project involving a commercial game’s client can also attract scrutiny from the rights holder. Project Rogue’s developers have not claimed that Ubisoft has endorsed or approved their work.

For now, XDefiant remains officially shut down and Project Rogue should be viewed as an experimental community revival rather than a playable replacement. The team has not announced when users will be able to join matches, and its own developers stress that more work is required before gameplay becomes possible. If the project reaches that stage, however, it could give former XDefiant players a way to access the shooter again more than a year after Ubisoft switched off its official servers.
